    Can Chop Pecans---Sort Of

I am trying to cut down on the French fries that we made years ago with the older Veg-o-Matic. I have 7 pecan trees and make all sorts of goodies using pecans. I keep looking for a way to chop pecans into uniform chunks. The food processors I have do a decent job, but the variation in size is unacceptable. Commercial nut choppers are too expensive for me. I bought this Veg-o-Matic as an experiment to see if it would work, off label, as a nut chopper. So far it is my tool of choice for making small chunks. I use the dicing blades and chop about an ounce at a time. I do have to tape down the blades, since the pusher, as it retracts, tries to remove them from the base. Since it takes some time to clean the pusher, I chop a pound or two at a time and keep the chopped nuts in the freezer. Works well for me.

    Not as good as original

I tried to dice a fresh onion from the garden. Quartered it and still couldn't push it thru the blade. Ended up cutting it up with a knife. Not very good. Seems like it is made out of cheap plastic. No where near as rugged as the original ones. Hope it will at least slice my beets after then are cooked. I don't really hold out much hope for slicing apples. Oh well, guess I was hoping it was like the old ones were.

  • Disappointed!

I had an original Veg-O-Matic years ago. It had only two blades, for thick or thin slices or French fries. It was perfect for making pickles, which is why I bought this new one. It DOES NOT HAVE STRAIGHT BLADES! I called Ronco and they said the old blades are no longer available. So I wasted my money on this one.

  • Almost Identical to the one I grew up with which mom has used (and the family has borrowed) for 40+ years

Blades are deeper, stiffer and set in plastic rings. Where the old model had thin ribbon blades or wires strung on zinc (or aluminum) rings. It cut the potatoes with ease. Great for slicing large quantities as you can set it in a large pan and just keep slicing.

  • Just As I Remembered

I went on a hunt for this food chopper after remembering the one my mom used to have. I read reviews and saw where some said the blades were not metal - these were. The first potato I sliced was like a trip down memory lane (smile). I set the potatoe upright, pushed on the top down swiftly and viola! I had french fries! It is exactly as I remembered it to be and I have used it several times since it arrived. It does everything I need and then some!

  • as good as they were in the 60's

still a great product, much faster and easier to use than many electric processors.

  • Maintenance?

Too hard to clean, instructions are very vague on that subject. Blades are sharp so care must be taken trying to clean them. It also doesn't work as easily as the hype says it does. Dicing an onion requires a repeated plunge of it, not a simple one stroke cut.

  • much better than original - bought one of the first out on the market.

My original just broke which lasted almost forever. Only use it for French fries, but the new one is much stronger and blade is sharper. it should last the rest of my life and then my son will use it. Love it!

  • Newer version

Great tool. Not as great as the old original, but still great.
