SynopsisDesperate parents of struggling readers now have an excellent resource with which "to help their child learn to read": Short Vowel Phonics books. The book series is praised by educators and parents. "Patricia Norton has created a phonics program that would be a great supplement for working with struggling readers," wrote one educator about the Short Vowel Phonics books. "These books are perfect for the frustrated or struggling reader. If you have children who can sound out words, but cannot yet read most beginning reader books, then these books can help them build their confidence and their reading skills," wrote one parent." Short Vowel Phonics books are unique, decodable, easy readers. The books are phonics controlled readers designed for kindergartners, 1st grade students, and struggling readers. The series uses only short vowel words and nine non-phonetic sight words. The series starts with words with the simple vowel-consonant-vowel pattern. Slowly, new phonetic concepts are added: consonant blends, silent consonants, double consonants,'-ing', consonants digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh). A new book has just been added to the series: Short Vowel Phonics 5: compound words, kn, -nch, -nk, -tch, and vowel y, (subtitle: Catfish and Bass). Each new phonetic concept is featured in one story or poem. Delightful black-and-white and color drawings illustrate the book. Three stories contain factual details on fishing, caring for chickens, and quilting. It is currently available in library quality hard bound binding only.
