  • A Must-Own For Serious Fans of the Original Band

This CD was far better than expected, based on some of the negative reviews I'd read about the sound quality. I have no complaints -- the band was really "on" that night, and they're playing great. Initially, in the first two minutes, I was concerned with what was coming, owing to the fact that MCLaughlin's voice mike, by which he introduces the band, was misadjusted or badly recorded, but once the band started playing it all seemed fine to me -- not the perfection of an "official" live album, but more than good enough to capture a lot of detail in the playing and all of the energy.

  • Interesting historical document

John McLaughlin is the world's best non-classical musician and so any of his work is well worth listening to. Most is outstanding, but there are two issues with this record. First, on a personal level, I have never found Mahavishnu Orchestra worth the fuss and that is down to the use of violin in a highly amplified environment. It is NOT down to Jerry Goodman who is a fine player. For example, without his presence on Side 1 of "My Goal's Beyond" that disc would be hugely impoverished. Second, this is a FM broadcast with crackle and poor reception present for much of the show. It reminds me of listening to this kind of broadcast in the early 1970s. We put up with it then but the sonic quality now available makes this kind of production less agreeable. All that said, there is superb playing here and as an historical document it is invaluable. But if you want to hear John's defining performance of "Miles Ahead" try the version on "Live at Ronnie Scott's". Like most of the 4th Dimension's output this shows JMcL in perhaps his best form ever.

  • Mahavishnu at its best

Incredible powerful live band - very good live performance, very good recording for not being professional.
