Ingmar Bergman's Academy Award-winning film centres on ten-year-old Alexander (Bertil Guve) and eight year-old Fanny (Pernilla Alwin), two children from the large, well-to-do Ekdahl theatrical family, and their reactions to the activities and relationships of their relations. The family is dominated by the widow Helena (Gunn Wällgren) whose son Oscar (Allan Edwall) runs the family theatre. When he suddenly dies, his wife Emilie (Ewa Froeling), mother to the two children, marries a strict bishop and the two children find their lives transformed for the worst.
