James Mangold (WALK THE LINE) directs this remake of the classic Western film. Christian Bale stars as a sheriff who vows to bring a killer (Academy Award winner Russell Crowe) to justice, but it won't be easy to put the criminal on the train to Yuma.
Set in the searing heat and unwelcoming landscape of Arizona in the late 1800s, Bale is humble farmer Dan Evans. A Civil War veteran, Evans is a brave man and a crack shot, but now he wants to live an honest life with his wife and two boys on their modest patch of land. Pursued by the bullying might of the railroad company that wishes to build on his property, Evans needs to make some quick money to pay off his debts. But drought and bad luck have put paid to his plans so he is forced to consider more drastic action. And opportunity arises in the unlikely shape of Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), a murdering thief who robs stagecoaches and trains for a living, along with his vicious but faithful band of outlaws. When Wade is finally captured, Evans volunteers to help deliver him to a train – the 3:10 to Yuma – that will take him to trial, on the condition that he is paid forhis trouble. So along with some hired muscle and representatives of the railroad, Wade recently robbed, Evans and company set off on a perilous journey which sees them being stalked by Wade’s gang. Evans is also in conflict with his eldest son William (Logan Lerman), who is showing a lack of respect. This is a source of stress for Evans, which is intensified when the boy joins their journey. But the ultimate test for Evans comes as he establishes a burgeoning relationship with Wade. This is an understated, subtle treat. Clearly relishing their respective roles, Bale and Crowe form a great on-screen partnership as they bounce off each other. Deft direction comes from James Mangold, who previously displayed his talents on the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line. He has a real eye for emotion and lets his actors enjoy the moment – letting the camera linger to create a feeling of depth and suspense. Despite a supporting cast that includes Gretchen Mol and Peter Fonda, it is young Lerman who manages to stand out, turning in a pitch-perfect performance as the tortured teen. The decent array of extras include deleted scenes, a mini movie called An Epic Explored, and a look at the history of outlaws in the Wild West.Read full review
A fantastic film that is one of the best modern westerns around at the moment. James Mangold's film starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale is taken from a short story by Elmore Leanord. After notorious outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) is captured, it's up to a handful of locals, including down on his luck rancher Dan Evans (Bale) and bounty hunter Byron McElroy (Peter Fonda), to bring him to justice. Their mission is to transport Wade to the town of Contention where he will be put on the 3:10 train to Yuma prison. While this journey entails a trip through dangerous Apache territory, the greatest threat to the posse comes from the prisoner himself and his murderous gang led by Charlie Prince (a standout Ben Foster). If you like great films, check this out. If you like great westerns, this is for you.Read full review
