This is a great film, adapted from a fantastic book. It is a film that lets you keep an open mind, a wishful mind, allowing you to step into this beautiful yet obtuse relationship between an "alien" called prot, and his psychiatrist. What I love about it, is that the pure innocence of prot draws you in and makes you take a step back with him to reevaluate everything you think you know about our world, and how it should work.
K-Pax is yet another excellent film that stars Kevin Spacey. The basic premise of the film is a man called Prot, who claims to be from the planet K-Pax, ends up in a psychiatric hospital and Jeff Bridges's character, Prot's psychiatrist Mark, has a battle to reveal Prot's true identity before he returns to K-Pax. Prot, though, is extremely convincing and Mark begins to wonder about the reality of the situation. Whilst the idea of life from another planet is not a new subject to be explored by films, K-Pax approaches it from a unique perspective. The film is genuinely suspenseful, and it is one of the rare films that is so well scripted that I did not see the "twist" coming at all. The film proceeds at a good pace, whilst still exploring all the issues in depth. The end is truly moving and memorable. Kevin Spacey is once again superb in this film. He was originally offered the role of Mark, but turned it down as when he read the script it was Prot he set his heart on playing. It is easy to see why, as he really is a wonderful character and one which of all actors out there Spacey was born to play. He is very convincing as Prot and makes the character wholly believable. He builds up Prot's disturbance masterfully throughout the film and interacts brilliantly with the other characters. He also manages to force down a whole banana (skin and all - Prot loves fruit), which really is dedication to the part! Jeff Bridges is also excellent as the psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with Prot. The exchanges between the two central characters are the best parts of the film, which is funny, moving and inspirational all in one. The two actors work extremely well together. K-Pax really is a beautiful film. The cinematography and music perfectly combine with brilliant performances to create a truly thought provoking film. It takes a special film to make you think about your priorities in life and the way humans interact with each other and react to circumstances thrust apon them. K-Pax is one of those special films. I would recommend it most highly to anyone who likes a film that is both very entertaining and intelligent.Read full review
Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges both play convincing roles in this touching tale. Spacey plays Prot - a pysciactric patient who claims to come from the planet K-Pax - a claim that soon becomes harder and harder for pysciatrist Dr Mark Powell (played by Bridges) to dismiss! The story revloves around the interaction of Prot with the other patients (and staff) and how he touches each and every one of their lives. I read the book (by Gene Brewer) before seeing the film and I was not in any way dissapointed with the film. Spacey's portrail of Prot is perfect - his almost childlike innocence (such as him enjoying a whole banana - unpeeled!) coupled with his deep and insightful interaction with the patients and staff make him a pleasure to watch. I think my favorite scene is the one in the planeterium where prot sketches the location of his home system (in the Constellation Lyra) on the light board perfectly - much the the amazement of the staff! The soundtrack to the film was written by Edward Shearmur and is quite excellent. It really adds atmosphere and brings the film to life. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a mixture of drama, suspense and who likes a feel good film!Read full review
I saw this movie some time ago and enjoyed it so much I bought the dvd. It is a thought provoking film with a "what if" story line, and a wow, that was different ending. Anyone with an open mind who has enjoyed the likes of Edward Scissor Hands, AI and The Bicentenial Man will enjoy this great film.
I had seen clips of K-Pax on telly, Soon as I realised that Kevin Spacey was in it, I just had to get the film on DVD. What can I say........... its fantastic Kevin Spacey plays a guy called Prot who just appears out of nowhere in a train station, The cops turn up and promptly hand him over to the local nuthouse. He gets passed over to a secure facility which is where the fun begins. He meets Jeff Bridges who is his shrink, and tells him all about the wonderful planet where he lives... K-PAX The film keeps you guessing from start to finish about whether Prot really is from another planet. Great acting throughout, and a real twist at the end. Very worth watching, you wont regret it
This is a thought provoking tale that brings a classic cinematic cocktail of science and fiction into a world of down-to-earth psychological analysis. Kevin Spacey performs fantastically in this slow paced, but progressive and accumulative storyline. The multiple climaxes continually surprise and this film is sure to leave even the most sceptical feeling a little more omnipotent as to the nature and possibility of extra-terrestrial life. The story could sound unoriginal but its presentation makes it absolutely unique. The subtlety of the characters gives dimension and realism to the seemingly improbable events which take place in the film. It manages to captivate the audience in a way no high-budget special effects crammed blockbuster ever could, but at the same time keeps a very mainstream appeal. If you are sick of films based on purely computer-generated characters and scenery which Hollywood seem to be relentlessly churning out these days, or you merely wish to watch something a little more profound and intelligent than comic book hero remakes this is the movie for you. In Short, for fans of Girl Interrupted, The Jacket, Donnie Darko and The IslandRead full review
I bought this DVD because I loved the movie first time I saw it and was even encouraged to buy the books. The prot/Robert character is a delightful enigma. I found myself really wanting to believe that he was from K-PAX but at the same time wanting Robert to be able to deal with the past. Terrific performances from both Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges and I really loved the way light is used in the movie. That somehow managed to encapsulate the tone of the book brilliantly. The subject matter may be complex and sad but there is something totally uplifting about the way prot sees other people and how he offers solutions to his fellow patients problems that the medical staff had not because he saw the person and not just the patient. The soundtrack is also terrific and brings the mood of the movie together. I defy anyone to watch this movie and feel nothing. Highly recommended and would urge any fans of this movie to read all the books.Read full review
Kevin Spacey as a most believable 'Alien',and Jeff Bridges as a Doubtful Psychiatrist. A story of 'is he Isn't he', from K-PAX a planet out of our solar system. All the tests, questions point to the truth.'Prot' helping his fellow patients on his way, makes this a feel good movie. With a kick at the end. A great family film to test you.
I know how realistic this scenario is because I played it out last summer when I spent 68 days and nights in a Psych ward following my 3 strokes, cerebral blood clot and hyperactivity disorder (HYPOMANIA !). I volunteered to go in because I was hallucinating which is very common with any sort of brain trauma. It turned out to be an enormous coincidence that I developed hypomainia symptoms at simultaneously but the doctors decided it was better to section me for 28 days just in case. I had my fun and played Kevin Spacey's role and the reaction from the other patients was just like in the film. iT'S NOT JUST A BRILLIANT MOVIE BUT TRUST ME iT'S damned AUTHENTIC!
Excellent film.
