Part tribute to the Doris Day/Rock Hudson romantic comedies of the 1950s and 1960s, and part commentary on the changing sexual mores of a bygone era, DOWN WITH LOVE is a bright, funny, technicolor treat that sets out to prove that opposites attract. Set in early-60s New York, the film follows the exploits of hot new feminist author Barbara Novak (Renee Zellweger), whose best-selling book "Down With Love" teaches women to focus on their careers, and never fall in love. This viewpoint is in direct contrast with Catcher (Catch) Block (Ewan McGregor), the simmering, smooth journalist and man-about-town. Catch and Barbara soon become arch enemies. But as the book sales soar, Catch hatches a devious plan, disguising himself in an attempt to seduce the divine Ms. Novak, thereby debunking the myths of her book, and simultaneously winning the journalistic scoop of the year.
Director Peyton Reed has successfully emulated the comedies of yesteryear with this hammy, heady mix of endless double entendres, split-screen techniques, and a healthy dose of sexual politics. Zellweger and McGregor clearly delight in their retro roles, deliciously exaggerating their characters, with ample support provided by David Hyde Pierce and Sarah Paulson. DOWN WITH LOVE is a comedy that uses characters from the past to deliver a message that resonates in the present, and provides across-the-board appeal for audiences of all ages.

a great movie you will love it
this is a great dvd to watch i saw it when it first came out. renee is a great actor u will love this dvd if you like a funny movie. you wount be disapointed.

Down with Love
Based in style on the 1960s Doris Day/Rock Hudson Rom Coms this film is stylish and slick. It is set in New york and the attention to detail creating the feel of the Universal films of the era. Nice supporting performances support Zellweger and McGreggor who are obviously having a ball making this film. My only criticism is that the film keeps sliding post Millenium winks at the audience, shouting spoof from the rooftop rather than letting us infer it. Zellweger looks slinky and sexy and Ewan McGregor puts in a technically perfect performance, but unlike the original movies its a little too smug and the result is slick, visually superb, technically beautifully made but somehow a little heartless. In fact it is only the guy who plays Nialls Crane in Frasier who,s supporting role really has soul. A good film for a night in, predominantly romantic as opposed to comedy but not a classic in the style of Jerry MacGuire, or Bridget Jones (1) and lacks the naivety that gave the originals much of their charm.Read full review

Down with love
this movie just oozed cheese, it wasn't really my cup of tea or my friends who are cheese mad!! For me a very biazare movie but perhaps you should view it to make up your own opinion, probably a good movie to have on during a night in with the girls when yuo don't really pay that much attention to the movie.

This film didn't really inspire me at all. Don't hold that against me, it's just my opinion! Although the lovely Ewan McGregor made it much more pleasing to watch!
