I bought this item because I had the film on VHS I and wanted to keep it for future watching so needed to update my collection. This is a hard film to watch. The struggle of the band of gypsies to survive in Nazi occupied Europe is a gripping and harrowing story. Few live to see the end of the conflict. There are many films about the persecution of the Jews by the Nazis but few about the treatment of gypsies and this is a worthy effort. Watching any film with subtitles requires a bit of effort. It may not compare for some people with bigger budget efforts like, say, Schindler's List because of this. Some of the acting is a bit variable but the genuine emotion carries it through.
And The Violins Stopped Playing is a film that lets you know how lucky we all are to live a life without oppression. The outcome of two world wars could have been so different. We must never forget what happened, ever.Unfortunately for the Roma they are still being oppressed today.this film is a reminder that if you are different to the rest of the world, authority will continue to wrest you to their will. This film is a very fine film, and also a very sad film,it certainly moved me.Mans inhumanity to man has no bounds.
This movie tells the story of a group of people that for the most part are forgotten when stories of World war 11 are told...the gypsies Once Hitler felt he had a handle on the extermination of the Jews he turned his hand at removing other groups that did'nt fit his "ideal german" This is one such story. The movie is quite slow to begin with as it gives a background to the gypsy lifestyle, once that is established then we see the horrors this particular group encountered while trying to survive. A different war movie to say the least.

This is a really good film about a subject that is offten ignored or forgoten about altogether. This moving true story surrounding a group of gypsies in occupied Poland during WW2 is about how, against a bitter and bloody backdrop, they struggle on with only their strength and courage to survive. Over all it is a very well acted war time film about the tragedies and atrocities of the holocaust. It is based on a true story of a familys bid for freedom. Well worth watching :)
