Additional InformationBased on the novel by James Hilton, GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS is the story of a shy schoolteacher who dedicates his life to his boys. In an Oscar-winning performance, Robert Donat plays Mr. Chipping, a young classics scholar en route to his first assignment at the reputable Brookfield school. Although his first interactions with the boys go miserably, he remains determined to become headmaster. But Chipping is simply too stuck on propriety to ever become popular with the students. Depressed, Chipping goes hiking in the Tyrols, where he meets Katherine Ellis (Greer Garson, in her first screen role). The two meet again on the Danube in Vienna, where they waltz the night away and kiss for the first time. Katherine becomes Mrs. Chipping, and she renames him Mr. Chips when they return together to Brookfield. Over time, the charming Mrs. Chipping turns Mr. Chips into an amiable gentleman who is adored by his pupils. But just when the world looks its rosiest, the depths of tragedy await Mr. Chips. Directed by Sam Wood, GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1939.

  • classic black and white picture from the 1930s

Robert Donat is one of my favourite English actors. In 1939 he won the Oscar for his portrayal of Mr Chips beating Rhett Butler actor in Gone With the Wind. The film is one of the classic black and white pictures of the era.

  • Tissues At The Ready!

I really love this film! Robert Donat is just the best as Mr Chips. Beautiful acting. It’s really old but to me it’s one of the best films. It’s sad, moving, heartfelt, touching. The way Mr Chips is so loved and so highly thought of by everyone is just so beautiful to watch. His pupils adore him, it’s just the best and so lovely to watch. A bit of everything so certainly entertaining. Tissues definitely needed though. I love it!

  • Real Life

I found this to be an entertaining film , with characters which I assume were more true to life than the fantasy world we tend to currently live in . Perhaps we all need a little fantasy now and again but not constantly . I am not a violent person by nature but discipline and respect in our education system have long since died a death . In the 1950's the school teachers commanded respect , as did the masters in this film . The UK has fallen down the educational ladder , we are too obsessed with being PC . This was a film about moulding young minds , preparing them for an uncertain future . Life can be hard and we had best be prepared for it not always being "Peaches and cream "

  • lightweight with great features

because it is such a good story. Martin Clunes ages so well, the make up artists did a good job to age him without making him look unreal.
