Recorded live in London's Playhouse Theatre, My Gaff, My Rules sees Al Murray's Perrier Award-winning comic creation in top, boisterous ale-swilling form. The Pub Landlord has been compared to the likes of Alf Garnett and Harry Enfield's Loadsamoney character, but that doesn't prepare the viewer for Murray's highly developed and sophisticated lampoon of True Brit values. Since Murray has built up his following largely without the advantage of a TV profile, this represents an indispensable opportunity to see him on-screen. Murray is merciless in coercing audiences into participation, demanding their names and professions, which generally disgust him, particularly those working in IT. One Hector, who abbreviates to "Heckie" is picked out for serial abuse by Murray, as is Jeremy the Australian ("returned to the scene of the crime, have you?") and a young woman whom he suspects of being a feminist: "trousers, job, the whole package". Although Murray's prejudices are predictable--such as a loathing of the French--his reasons for disliking them are much less so ("They've got a town called Brest. And none of 'em think it's funny".) His powers of invention in order to justify his ludicrous bigotry leave you gasping for air. He's expanded the scope of his musings and is now able, ingeniously, to dismiss Sir Isaac Newton as a "timewaster". Meanwhile, both his use of language and onstage physical movement are surprisingly elegant. All of his strengths as a performer come together in a climactic routine in which he lambasts Germans for making everything that they say "come out funny". Murray then "proves" it with a series of Germanic nursery rhyme recitations which is a brilliantly observed virtuoso parody of cinematic Teutonic clichés. Absolutely not for boneheads. Well, finally I get through to where the internerds are hiding, and find a few reviews of the lecture I gave that is currently available on DVD and VHS. And what can I say--it's top notch, isn't it? Though I'm not sure about all you lot saying it's funny--all I'm offering is fact, not opinion. Back off, Brussels!Read full review
We absolutely love Al Murray, and in our opinion, he is the best comedian on TV. His performance on this dvd is no exception! Our faces hurt from all the laughing we did! Brilliant for any Al Murray fans out there. I actually bought this dvd as a christmas gift for my boyfriend and now we want all his dvd's and would love to see him live. Great dvd for any avid fan out there.
Al murray is a comedy genius! He's quick witted and very original. Not to keen on the shouting and swearing but it's part of his character and he does it so well! I love 'Time gentleman please' which was his sitcom on Paramount a while back and this live set he does of his popular pub landlord character didn't disappoint. Awaiting Time gentleman to be released now!
I hunted this down after learning it was the source of the ' German nursery rhymes ' sketch, which is genius. The whole DVD is brilliant and shows Al Murray at his politically-correct and culturally-sensitive best.
I watched al murray on the tv on a friday night and thought him hilarious. Especially when he goes on about the french and germans. so i decided to buy this dvd of him which i believe was the first one he made. And it was briliant from start to finish
For those people who like stand up, you could do a lot worse than this.Having only seen Al Murray hosting quiz games on tv,I was pleasantly surprised with his wit and originality.I will definetly be looking out for more dvd's from Mr Murray.
If you like the pub landlord you should love this. Interacts quite a bit with the crowd which is unusual for a stand-up comedian. Doesn't reel off jokes but instead gives his unique very funny philosophies and opinions on topics such as geniuses, the french and germans, mozart and parenthood. Some parts had me laughing out loud, others, at times could be difficult to appreciate if you're not too intelligent. All in all, very funny, quite rude with very strong language. Right up my street!
I love his jokes, I like his patriotism, or what he thinks is patriotism. It's just fun from start to finish. The extras are funny as well. Great DVD if you like Al Murray. Funny Guy.
EXCELLENT DVD WELL WORTH WATCHING ANYONE WHO LIKES AL WILL LOVE HIM IN THIS. FUNNY RIGHT FROM THE START!9/10
