Additional InformationMorton (Gabriele Ferzetti), the power-hungry owner of a railroad company, hires Frank (Henry Fonda, playing against type), a gunfighter without a conscience, to kill anyone who stands in the way of the completion of the railroad. After Frank murders land owner Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), McBain's widow (Claudia Cardinale) hires two killers of her own to protect her and gain revenge: a mysterious, harmonica-playing desperado (Charles Bronson) and his rogue sidekick (Jason Robards). Using techniques previously unseen in the genre, Sergio Leone utilizes close-ups, color, and Ennio Morricone's trademark score to create a tense and somber meditation on death which is widely considered to be one of the best westerns in cinematic history. Soon-to-be legendary Italian directors Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA) and Bernardo Bertolucci (THE LAST EMPEROR) collaborated with Leone on the screenplay.
ReviewsLos Angeles Times - ...One beautiful image follows another....Throughout, Leone is a master of the expressive gesture in celebration of an Old West that exists more in our imaginations than it ever did in reality..., USA Today - ...Director Sergio Leone's 'spaghetti' masterpiece'..., Total Film - ...Brilliant....Brutal, bloody and poetic, this is, without hyperbole, one of the greatest Westerns ever made..., Movieline's Hollywood Life - ...Bronson and Fonda never looked better...
Absolutely stunning western. One of the best of all time. They don't make them like this anymore. Classic acting by Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards and Claudia Cardinale. The story line is very good as well. The musical score by Ennio Morricone is superb. Highlights the hopes and fears, vengeance, lawlessness and greed of the time. Directed by Sergio Leone at his best.
Although this film has been described by many as the best western ever, it would seem that I may be missing something as I found it rather disappointing. Films that I have really enjoyed, I can watch again and again, but it will be a long time before I watch this film again, if ever.
The music in this film is simply breathtaking. The stars are superb and Claudia Cardinale is so beautiful, The extra details on the second disc are so interesting. Excellent delivery times. Must be one of the best Westerns ever.
This, until recently IMO, movie never got the appreciation it so rightly deserves. It’s a masterpiece of story, shifting timeline, casting and editing, all accompanied by the director’s trademark musical collaborator.
I have read a lot of reveiws about this film saying it is the best western ever made, with much romantasizing about how its pace is meant to emulate the last gasps of a dying man, and all the characters except the woman know they wont reach the end alive. Yes all this may be true and the film is good, but I still think there are better westerns. The good the bad and the ugly, Yuma, How the west was won, Dances with wolves, and Last of the Mohicans are in my opinion all superior films of the genre. Having said that it was still worth buying at the price.
WELL PRODUCED,DIRECTED AND ACTED WITH A STAR CAST FOR THE TIME. THE BACKGROUND AND THEME MUSIC IS BRILLIANT, SO CATCHING. THE STORYLINE IS THE BEST OF THE SPAGHETTI WESTERNS WITH A FINALE THAT IS SO SAD BUT EXPERTLY DONE.
