Educational as well as entertaining, it gives a deep insight into the lives of Japanese people all those years ago. Very descriptive, very cruel, Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune were magnificent in their roles as John Blackthorne and Toranaga, a would be Shogun, War Lord of all the Japans..A stunning watch !.

Excellent in terms of content! Was really getting into it until dvd 2 refused to be played. Anyhow went straight to dvd 3 and still maintained a great watch as I found it a very insightful, enjoyable viewing; and very nostalgic as I have vague memories of it as a child when it was first shown on UK TV.

I missed this original mini series when i was a teenager as I was looking at other things when this great show ran in the 70s, so i decided to revisit some older TV, as i find much modern TV to be hopeless and unentertaining these days. Shogun was a good snapshot and a fine balance, I think, of life in Japan in the 17th century, through I was disappointed that the battle scenes were a bit mundane. Modern Day movies have spoilt us these days, in that our expectations demand much more. There should have been at least one HUGE battle and it would have been the cherry on the cake to this great TV show, but it never happened. But the series was highly entertaining if you watch it for exactly for what it is. Acting by Richard Chamberlain and the Japanese lady (who's name escapes me) was okay, but the guy that played Lord Taronaga's character was amazingly AWESOME. the scenery and sets were breath taking, and those Japanese film set workers paid every attention to incredible detail, and the wardrobe worn by the actors were amazing. This show reflects the mindset of the people of the time, and explains why Japanese society ran as it did. It explains the brutality, the humanity, the perfection in which they aspire to in a beautiful and almost poetic way in my humble opinion. Be warned, there are some quite scary scenes in the show. Although the show is carefully edited to allow 70's airtime on TV, if you don't like to see beheadings and people boiled alive, then this show might not be for you. the Japanese were brutal with their own people back then, and this message comes across very clearly in the mini series. I was glad I bought and watched the DVD though, and historically, I believe it gives a good Insight into what things may have been like in Japan in those days. Highly entertaining, I loved it!Read full review
It was in excellent condition . Delivery was very quick.I’ve only watched it twice . A very good bargain . Love the design of boxset. The film is good. can’t submit the review of the actual film as it’s too involved. Roughly Ships, swords. Treachery. Fights. Love story and clash of cultures and politics . Greed and lust, power struggles with stunning scenery, big horses .archery and a dash of differing cultural beliefs . quest to get home as well . The costumes are amazing. Acting was good . Possible to learn a few words so what’s not to like.

For me, it is a series that i like to watch many times. To be able to own it, rather than relying on streaming media is a big plus.I also have the book. To be able to watch it on the tv is a bonus. Price ? Ridiculously cheap. Free postage. Pristine new condition. No damage or marks. Arrived on the stated date. I own quite a few Chinese/Japanese films and series and this will be a welcome addition to my collection.
