  • Le Mepris/Contempt (1963) DVD (2004) Dir. Godard with Bardot/Piccoli/Palance

There are several reasons for buying Le Mepris; it's a recognised classic, has an existential storyline with tragi-comedic delivery, it has impressive leads (Bardot/Piccoli/Palance), it is set in a near idyllic part of western Europe: Capri, Italy but mostly for me, the real treat is seeing the domestic setting where a lot of the marital friction-drama unfolds. The film uses Casa Malaparte (1937) as a primary setting, which is possibly one of the most enigmatic early 20C homes in existence. It is a recognised classic piece of domestic architecture, with a complex history. Named after its owner, Curzio Malaparte, the house is perched on a rocky outcrop at Punto Massulla, Capri, with awkward access by foot, that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. The architecture of the house is eclectic, mixing regional modernism with the archaic relics of European history and its formal design is a response to its open, idyllic context - the building form is a rust coloured rectangular block with a set of massive steps at one end that lead to a completely flat roof without balustrades, that acts as viewing platform to the vast natural surrounds of the sea, sky and west coast of Italy. Over the years the authorship of the house's design has come under scrutiny as Malaparte originally commissioned architect Adalberto Libera (a 'Rationalist') to design the property but the completed design is less pure, more historically eclectic and romantic, which reflects its owner. So, it is believed that Malaparte had a strong hand in the actual built design. Either way, it's a perfect setting for Godard's film and nearly as good as taking a holiday.

  • le mepris, and what I thought of it.

I had tried to watch this film online for free at first, because it had such rave reviews, which led me to buy this. Sadly I couldn't agree less with the reviews I read. Possibly it was because this DVD is dubbed, that added to my sense of disappointment, but I found the "characters" unbelievable, the dialogue, pretentious, and the whole scenario of the marriage of the main characters to appear highly unlikely. Brigitte Bardot's acting left a heck of a lot to be desired, and the musical sound track sounded lousy. I hated this film from beginning to end and could find no redeeming features. In fact my favourite part of it was "Fin."
