Additional InformationSet in Wiltshire in 1694, on the country estate of Mr and Mrs Herbert, this erotic murder mystery is Greenaway's lavish breakthrough creation as director. The Herbert's are having some marital difficulties, so he decides to take a two week holiday by himself. To surprise him on his return, Mrs. Herbert commissions an effete artist to draw twelve portraits of her estate. The artist agrees on the condition that he may sexually exploit Mrs. Herbert's body for those two weeks, she accepts his condition and he sets to work around the beautiful, formal and manicured grounds. When Mr. Herbert is found dead in his own moat at the end of those two weeks, the artist is the prime suspect, and Mrs. Herbert believes the mystery can be solved by close examination of the drawings the artist has done. With extravagant costumes, witty indulgent dialogue, impeccable production and a score by long-time collaborator Michael Nyman, THE DRAUGHTSMAN'S CONTRACT is a veritable feast for the senses.

  • Film music

This is an excellent film with a subliminal message. Very interesting indeed, but have a look at the Extras after watching the main feature. I bought the DVD originally for the theme music "Chasing Sheep is Best Left to Shepherds" by Michael Nyman. The music was one time used in a TV ad for Walkers Crisps!

  • Title in keeping with the outcome

A slow burn. I did not know what to expect other than it is a Greenaway film. The point of the story is not revealed until right at the end. It was second hand and given the price it was ok but I would not bother to watch it again.

  • Interesting to re-visit after many years

I remember seeing this at the time it was produced and wanted to re-visit. Interesting how social attitudes have change with the passing years. Spectacular costumes, wigs and settings and still strangely disturbing material.

  • Extraordinary film

There is no film quite like this one. The characters are extraordinary and so is the dialogue. Even the outfits are beautifully over the top. Gorgeously filmed, it is the tale of a draftsman in the 1600s who is commissioned to draw 12 sketches of a country house and grounds. It is very amusing and thoroughly enjoyable to watch as the draughtsman and the person who commissioned him both get more than they bargained for. A unique film.
