The leaning tower is part of an ensemble of cathedral, tower, baptistery and cemetery in the Tuscan city of Pisa. UNESCO declared the ensemble a world cultural heritage site in 1987. The tower itself was intended as a bell tower for the neighboring cathedral. With its round shape, colonnades on Allen floors and the originally planned height of 100 meters, it was intended to be clearly different from other towers in Italy and thus demonstrate the wealth and power of the medieval city-state of Pisa.
