Good cutlass, great value!
Like most Cold Steel products, this is a quality blade; sharp edge and point, and nothing loose or rattling. The guard is heavy gauge and solid, making for real hand protection. It is not wall-hanger junk, and I wouldn't be afraid of it failing in an actual battle. No, it's not the quality of a custom-made blade by a master smith from the Bladesmithing Society, but then then again it's also a tenth of the price and will definitely do the job, whether reenacting or defending your home. It is an addictive blade, and you'll want to take it out and go through the moves on a regular basis and make you dream of sea battles.
Just some notes: The black finish on the blade is rubbing off quickly, but that's not an issue for me since I like a bright blade anyway.
This is NOT a sword for someone without good wrist and grip strength, and probably not ideal for the average woman or the smaller man; it is a heavy chopper with a smooth handle, and many if not most people would probably want to add a thong for security, because nobody wants a 3 pound 2' razor with a needle point flying off randomly should it slip out of your hand. The handle is large enough to fit any sized hand, even when using the saber grip (which I would hesitate to do with this because of its weight and blade-heavy balance), and even though I have big hands, I still have plenty of room, maybe too much. I intend to fix that by adding a string wrap complete with Turks head knot stops to keep it where I want it, in addition to the retention thong.
