Five star pedal after an inexpensive tube swap!

I bought this without high expectations, just wanting to see what the cheapest tube pedal out there would be like. With the stock tube, the sound is decent but a bit scratchy in the treble. But I had a spare Electro-Harmonix 7025 (a 12AX7 with lower noise specs) that I swapped in and it really enhanced the sound. This $15 tube upgrade made this cheap pedal into a seriously solid medium gain distortion well-suited to classic rock kind of sounds. My four star rating is based on the product as it comes to you when you buy it, but after the upgrade I think of this as a five star pedal. The cost of the pedal and the tube make it not much more expensive than the ubiquitous Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, but I would say with the new tube it sounds significantly better than the DS-1. With the stock tube it may be comparable in sound quality, but with the 7025 the distortion is full and thick-sounding, great for lead parts, and not overly harsh and shrill, as the DS-1 tends to be. It is definitely a distortion pedal, not an overdrive, and if you’re looking for more of the sound of a tube amp being pushed a bit, this can’t really get you that edge of breakup sound even at the lowest end of the gain knob. I know sometimes people are interested in tube gear purely for the “warm sound” associated with tubes, but that sound comes from mild saturation and that is not what this pedal does. Make no mistake, as I said, this is a distortion pedal. For EQ, it only has a treble control, but it retains your bass rather than cutting it or boosting the mids as some other pedals do. I expect this would work well as a bass effect too. Changing the tube is pretty simple and only requires a screwdriver. The original tube was in the socket pretty tightly on mine and I had some concern I could damage something trying to pull it out, but I proceeded with some caution and had no problems, and even switched back and forth a few times for comparison without issue. I’m really impressed with the sound of this pedal, even setting aside the price, and the ability to change the tube allows for some fun experimentation and the opportunity for tone shaping to make it suit your desires in a way that very few other distortions allow. It won’t get you metal levels of distortion, but otherwise I’d recommend this to anyone who needs a good rock distortion pedal and would absolutely encourage anyone considering a DS-1 to buy this and a new tube instead. You can definitely do worse, even at much higher prices.

    Worth fixing!

As this pedal comes in the box, completely unusable sound. Almost no sound at all actually. The 6n2 tube that comes with it is beyond terrible. But the pedal really wakes up with a 12AX7. Still sounds bad though. Replacing all of the electrolytic caps inside actually made it sound REALLY GOOD though. It's definitely worth buying if you don't mind upgrading all the super terrible internals. It can be a fantastic tube distortion pedal.

  • Fun pedal - great value - complete bypass is awesome

Pretty good tube included. The pedal generates noise, if you are using it for all your gain beware. If you're just warming up the sound this is fantastic. If you switch it off it's true bypassed so that is handy. I am going to try an 18v - you need to have 12v and at least 500ma - I am going to try some tubes. You can used any of the AX7 types apparently. To change the tube, you have to take it apart, but it is 8 screws and easy to put back together with no damage, but the tube socket (on mine, at least) is tight - take your time. All in all for a ~$50 pedal, this is really cool. Solid build - looks hand soldered to me (nothing I could see was loose)

  • Unbelievable Sound At Any Price

My son loves this pedal. He's looking at tube amp heads and most have a tube in the preamp section and a solid state amp section. This gives him a sense of what that type of amp might sound like and the sound quality from this little pedal is amazing!

  • Great pedal

I was actually pretty blown away by this pedal, it really does sound great. A really nice valvey drive. Would definitely recommend getting one if you're thinking about it. I have yet to try swapping the valve out for a 12ax7, but from what I've heard that will improve the sound even further. Note that you need a power supply, I'm using a generic 12v DC one. It's worth mentioning that I also needed a polarity swap cable, because most 12vdc supplies are centre positive, and this pedal is centre negative

  • Love this pedal

I have bought a bunch of affordable pedals searching for that driven slightly crunchy loose gain guitar tone I have in my head, like 90s DC punk records ... and this is basically all I needed from the get go. This thing with mid gain into a slightly broken up tube amp is killer. Only complaint is that the volume has to be maxed for it to be at unity volume. Also it can have some hum until you find the power supply it likes and it doesn’t like sharing power with others. But for me this Pedal is all I need going into the front of an amp

  • Excellent value

Amazing tone and response out of a simple box; you can also change the tubes to your liking! this is a perfect fit for an amp that needs a little more edge or will enhance any amps tone for that matter
