Lighter model that is stripped of a classic feature.

As always, the Shimano Stradic series is quiet and smooth feeling. But the one thing that they do not tell you when purchasing online is that it does not any longer have a lever to release the spool for backing up when you are hung up on something. The only way to get slack line is to flop the bail over and lose total control of the line going out momentarily until you flip the bail again and turn the handle to tighten up. I find this deceiving on Shimano's and the selling dealers. A classic case of cheapening the product. This is like having a car with no reverse. It so far reliable as my other Stradics.

    hear gears meshing/grinding when reeling

this is a Stradic so I expect that performance would be above the typical Shimano reels. It casts well and drag is good but when reeling fast or reeling when the line is taut you can feel the gears meshing and can actually hear it. This particular reel may be defective since you should not be able to hear or feel the gears grind.

  • Mixed blessing in fresh water

Have always appreciated the Shimano quality and performance. The elimination of the anti- reverse lever will take getting used to as I’ve used it for years to back-reel the occasional larger fish. Since there’s no anti reverse on my casting reels I guess I’ll get used to it with more experience.

  • Shimano Stradic 1000 perfect fit for 6-8 pound line for walleyes

Perfect....this was a gift. From personal experience, I knew this was exactly what was needed for walleye fishing in Canada. Great capacity for handling any walleye and the occasional northern and always welcomed surprise smallmouth. We jig fish with live bait in 18 to 24 feet areas of the lake, A superior reel in every respect. Fully recommended with 6 or 8 pound test mono or microfilament line like Nanofil.

  • Great for small game, trout or crappie

The reel is super smooth and is perfect for trout and panfish. Can't wait to try it out this weekend. Thank you American Legacy Fishing

  • A winner

Have the Stradic FK 1000 on a St Croix Legend Extreme. Together that’s more than I paid for my first two cars!! As a finesse setup it must be close to the best on the planet. The FK is great in every respect, except I really wish they would have kept the reverse switch. I knew they didn’t so I can’t downgrade on that basis. I have FI’s with the switch and use those for jigging uneven bottom when you have to adjust depth constantly. That calls for constant forward and backward reeling. Don’t get an FK if that’s your primary use!! But for typical casting the back reeling isn’t an issue so then it’s not a disadvantage, and the smoothness and function of the reel really shines.

  • Poorly designed and made

I've owned and used a pearl white stradic 1000 for around 5 years now and it runs 3 times quieter than the HGFK I just bought. It sounds like a bearing or gear is bad. Don't know if this reel is a fluke or whether they're all made this way, but I'm definitely disappointed. My wife says I'm getting hard of hearing but I can definitely hear and feel the growling in this reel.

Too good to ,use. Still sitting on my desk to look at. I expect it to see service during my annual Fall Canadian Bass fishing trip.

  • Great follow on to Stradic FJ

The reel is excellent, and after working it for a couple days, it is butter smooth. The forged aluminum body is very stiff and doesn't flex at all, and the drag is a dream, no hiccups or mini jolts from a bad drag. If you have an FJ, then it might not be worth it to upgrade, but if you're looking for a great reel for the buck, this is it. Go Shimano!
