  • Weighty tome but hard work

The book is unhelpful and out of date. It tells you to do things without explaining how to do them. On the plus side it does cover a lot of ground and if you persist with it you can learn a lot. I think the book could be better designed in html so that you could explore areas of interest. It could also have a better index. That would, however, take a lot more work on the part of the authors and be very difficult to do on paper. The best thing about it is that it teaches you the Linux language: the vocabulary of Linux. Not the commands themselves, though it does that to a certain extent; but the basics like shell.
