About this product

Product Information

The definitive, dramatic untold story of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, based on original reporting and new archival research. THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER 'Superb, enthralling and necessarily terrifying . . . every step feels spring-loaded with tension... extraordinary.' The New York Times The story of Chernobyl is more complex, more human, and more terrifying than the Soviet myth. Adam Higginbotham has written a harrowing and compelling narrative which brings the 1986 disaster to life through the eyes of the men and women who witnessed it first-hand. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews conducted over the course of more than ten years, as well as letters, unpublished memoirs, and documents from recently-declassified archives, this book makes for a masterful non-fiction thriller. Chernobyl has become lodged in the collective nightmares of the world- shorthand for the spectral horrors of radiation poisoning, for a dangerous technology slipping its leash, for ecological fragility, and for what can happen when a dishonest and careless state endangers not only its own citizens, but all of humanity. It is a story that has long remained in dispute, clouded from the beginning in secrecy, propaganda, and misinformation. Midnight In Chernobyl is an indelible portrait of history's worst nuclear disaster, of human resilience and ingenuity and the lessons learned when mankind seeks to bend the natural world to his will - lessons which, in the face of climate change and other threats - remain not just vital but necessary. Now, Higginbotham brings us closer to the truth behind this colossal tragedy. 'Tells the story of the disaster and its gruesome aftermath with thriller-like flair . . . wonderful and chilling ... written with skill and passion.' The Observer 'An invaluable contribution to history.' Serhii Plokhy, Evening Standard LONGLISTED FOR THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF LITERATURE ONDAATJE PRIZE 2020

  • A Solid and Informative Account of a Terrible Disaster

An informative account of the events leading up to the explosion at Chernobyl, including the context in which the tragedy occurred - the political system which those in power manipulated to keep themselves in power - and the pressures on ordinary folk trying to survive the demands of the Communist Party. The culture of the USSR encouraged waste, drunkeness and slipshod work, a lethal combination in the nuclear industry, yet many of the workers were far more responsible than in other industries and were badly let down by those set over them. The book also explains how such a reactor was meant to work, its fatal flaws which were covered up by the authorities, and the different types of nuclear radiation and their effects on people. It also brings the story up to date with the recent developments affecting the site and the new containment building required due to the inadequacies of the original - which had to be constructed under extremely dangerous conditions and despite the usual unreasonable demands of the USSR authorities. So this is a very informative read for anyone interested in the subject.

  • Fascinating and well worth the read

It was a really good read and quite fascinating to be able to understand why it was such a huge disaster. There were a lot of Russian names/places which, at times, made it really hard to handle! However, if you are prepared to take your time with the progress then it is well worth the effort!
