Gods and Generals is one of the best war film of modern times. The acting is brilliant and characters are believable and, realistic and the film is historically accurate in every detail although some of the actors are a bit chubby for the period. The beards are better than in the film Gettysburg and some of the speeches are a bit to long, but the action shots are some of the best on film. This is a mans film and I don't think women will enjoy it so much. It contains all the emotions, Sadness . Laughter etc.,. I first purchased this film as a boxed set some years ago, but my copy of Gods and Generals got scratched so I had to buy this film again, because it is such a good film. Try it ,you will, I promise , enjoy it.

Well directed film, interesting story line based on a part of major American history, massive cast and a wonderful performance by the main actors. This DVD is great value for money.

It’s a good film. A bit long winded at times yet there were abrupt cuts that had been made that stopped the flow. Overall happy with it

This is a magnificent film, containing within it a true story, and the personal experiences of two actual men in the American Civil War. It is an accurate portrayal of the American Civil War and it's consequences, and the opposing view points for the conflict from the characters of both sides. The battle scenes are exceptionally well done, as they did not use hired extras.. but the American Civil War society, and other similar re enactment groups, who really know their subject well, and can perform such battles with total military accuracy, and this fact is very noticable when watching the film. As much as was possible it was filmed on the actual locations of the battles, and where not, it was filmed as close to the locations as possible, so the landscape scenes give the viewer as true a perspective of the actual battle terrains that these history changing events took place on. This is a superb film, and if you have only a vague subject knowledge, or just mildly interested in this period of American history, this film will probably kindle more interest in the subject. like the previous film by the same production team "Gettysburg" (also using the same format for the battles) Gods and Generals is (I am sure) a film you will want to watch again.Read full review
I've just seen the dvd of Gods & Generals, and it such a powerful film on not just about the Civil War but peoples private lives. It's how the State of Virginia had to go to war in 1861 with the union to defend their homes and beliefs. This is only one part of the story of the Civil War,some people say it was to free the slaves which is partly true, but also it was to make it a union state.Lincon thought by making war with Verginia that the other southern states would not join in but he was wrong. The Civil War was one of the biggest Civil Wars ever with 53,000 men died for what they believed in. For me the film was as true and as close to the American Civil War as you could get. But as I've said this is one battle of the Civil War in 1861 and their was lots of other battles like Bull Run and Gettysburg until 1865. But the true story of the American Civil War will never be-knowRead full review
A film dealing with the years of victories for the Confederacy .The macabre and realistic winter slaughter at Fredericksburg is depicted with all the gruesome reality of this relatively unknown battle. Stonewall Jacksons inner self and religious zeal offer an intriging insight into a figure everyone has heard of but few actually know anything about .The film ends with the Union disaster at Chancelorsville in may 1862 . The generals on both sides are depicted well with Ambrose, Hancock, Lee and Staurt all portrayed in earnest .Some civilian element to the film gives a good perspective and shows this American war of self-determination was far from being unpopular and also offers the possibility that the eventual outcome was far from inevitable therefore by definition the entire history of the world ,without a United States of America, may have taken a different courseRead full review
history of civil war and bravery of each sides reasons to take up arms. i needed to understand how ordinary men chose to fight rather than stay at their homes and families.my son serves in the army and has been in many operations reasaons its a job, it pays for family needs, civillian life, no guarantee of work, however if any one close to myself was killed due to muslim extremist, i myself would seek reprisals and take muslim extr lifes, has i would find it hard to forgive, ordinary muslims i would not have a problem with,
