Ann-Margret captures the spirit of Blanch Du Bois beautifully, conveying the vulnerability so exposed by her hideous brother-in-law, played with utter plausibility by Treat Williams. Although the Vivian Leigh - Marlon Brando version may be the better known, I found this was much truer to the novel (possibly because the censor in the 1950s quelled some of the plot lines as inappropriate for a cinema audience). Definitely worth watching, especially if you are teaching the novel as an A Level text. Excellent.

Tennessee Williams based his screenplay on Oscar Saul's adaptation of Williams' own Pulitzer Prize-winning play set in a grimy New Orleans project. The story of the fragile sentimentalism of a woman who visits her sister only to be taunted mercilessly by her childish brother-in-law. This classic film garnered 12 Academy Award Nominations (including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Screeplay), winning 4 including Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter), and Best Supporting Actor (Karl Malden). This version features three minutes of footage that was deleted from the final 1951 release version upon demands made by the Production Code, footage thought lost until its rediscovery in the early 1990s. This DVD release is the fully restored version of Elia Kazan's original cut and the documentary 'Desire And Censorship' on Disc 2 describes his struggle in getting the past the censors.Read full review
This is a very credible version of Tennessee Williams' best-known play, handsomely mounted and superbly acted by a strong cast. Originally made for TV in the '80s as a miniseries and filmed on videotape, the picture quality is not great, but the design is, firmly rooting it in post-war New Orleans. The acting is more naturalistic in this attempt by John Irwin than in Kazan's original: Ann-Margret's Blanche is more feminine, less stagey and camp than Vivien Leigh's' and Treat Williams' Stanley is smaller, meaner, and less disturbingly heroic than Brando's. The performances of the supporting cast are brilliant, too. In the thirty-some years between the two versions, screen censorship had been relaxed to the extent that this version is truer to the original text of Williams' play as originally performed on stage.Read full review
