Additional InformationThis release presents the entire series of LOVE FOR LYDIA. Based on a novel by H.E. Bates it compellingly recreates the heady abandon of the 1920s Jazz Age through the story of a young girl's transformation from shy teen to wild flapper. Heiress Lydia Aspen (Mel Martin) dances the Charleston as easily as she flits from one lover to the next, among them a struggling young writer (Christopher Blake) who earnestly loves her. The cast also includes Jeremy Irons in one of his earliest major roles, several years before his breakthrough in BRIDESHEAD REVISITED.

  • Brilliant acting and story

Beautifully filmed and acted drama from the 1970s. There's a tension through all the episodes. The script gives the characters a chance to develop. It is so unlike many modern adaptations where it is so fast-paced you never really get to know any of the characters. From the glory days of London Weekend Television. Shot on videotape even outdoors, using OB units which gives it some slightly weird outdoor effects. But colour tv was less than 10 years old when this was made. I loved it.

  • A Classic Serial Adaptation

This is a wonderful adaptation of H.E.Bates' love story - one which my wife and I watched avidly when it was originally broadcast at the end of the 'seventies. Mel Martin was brilliant as Lydia, while the late Chris Blake played convincingly as her first love, smitten forever by her. I'd recommend this to anyone!
