Firstly, an excellent Sunday afternoon film. But - beware the limitations of what could have been such a good film before it lost the plot ! The cast of Justin Chambers, Tim Roth, Catherine Deneuve and Stephen Rea seems at first a strong mix, but they do not seem to have the 'spark' of the earlier 1970's Richard Lester films. There is a lot of excellently furious swordplay with significant Hong Kong influences, which makes up for a lot of Rea and Roth's apparently bored performances, however Deneuve provides a welcome and different insight into the isolated queen of France, struggling to secretly support her ineffective husband against the schemes of the church. Roth camps it up as the homicidal, war-mongering Fevre, out of control of his master Richelieu, but just does not quite convinces. Justin Chambers as the impossibly handsome D'artagnan fights well, but his acting leaves a little to be desired. Everyone knows the story, but it seems to have been drastically cut to allow more swordfight scenes. Having said all that, it is a fun romp through what remains of a classic story and there are a lot worse films around to watch on a lazy afternoon. Nice Try !Read full review
