  • You were warned

Welllllllll... first a. brief personal history. When this album was first released, I snapped it up. All the players were personal favorites-- every single one, even including the wildly rambunctous bassist Richard Davis. Then I listened to it, and it played like a riddle, as in: why are these compositions and these performances so ridiculously abstruse? I'll admit now, though wdn't have back then, that I thought they were flaunting their "far-out" chops at the expense of meaningful playing. Over years (of critical praise for the album's landmark status) I gave it another try, and another. Still, for me, nada. Eventually I gave away the album (an LP) to an unsuspecting friend, and felt an immediate sense of relief. Years passed. Recently, there it was, Out To Lunch, bargain- basement cheap, and I thought, what the hell, let's give it one more chance. And once again experienced that old sinking feeling-- or lack of feeling-- for this cold-blooded masterpiece, a jazz landmark, according to innumerable jazz writers. I may be wrong. This may be the greatest jazz albums of all time. A landmark. Give it a whirl, but remember: you were warned.

  • A great repast

Dolphy: Out to Lunch I decided to follow up after hearing some live recordings with my main guy of the era, 'trane, when I realized that Dolphy held his own, and did his own thing and I liked it. I'm a rocker, not a jazzer - this stuff is great late at night when I want to turn everything else off and focus on the music.

  • Strange, weird & beautiful...

Along with Van Morrison /Astral Weeks this is music not of this world, in a good way. Essential Avant-garde Jazz.
