Reviews"It proves as capable of suspending your disbelief and blowing your mind as any blockbuster....The Darkness are back and, this time, it's personal.", "Still intact are guitars, guitars, guitars, Hawkins’ otherworldly falsetto, and the band’s proclivity for arena rock practitioners like KISS, Queen and AC/DC.", 4 stars out of 5 -- "Happily HOT CAKES re-boots the ebullient riffage and hooky, castrato-like histrionics that their 2003 debut PERMISSION TO LAND so welcome.", 3 stars out of 5 -- "HOT CAKES stays amusing, mixing beer-barrel chuggers with proud schlock ballads.", 4 stars out of 5 -- "HOT CAKES leaves you with the sense that The Darkness' reinvigoration will delight those longing for rock to rediscover the fun button."
Additional InformationFor every blues-rock, crotch-thrusting groove on Hot Cakes, there are just as many sparkling, sugar-coated melodies that light up the happy place in your brain.

  • A Fairly Hot Comeback

Back in 2003 The Darkness were huge in Britain thanks to their excellent debut Permission to Land selling over a million copies here. But after the disappointing follow-up album One Way Ticket To Hell the band split. This their first album in 7 years is a little less good than the debut but better than the 2nd album and a decent enough comeback. Opener Every Inch of You is a swaggering AC-DC like belter, Nothins Gonna Stop Us and With a Woman also rock hard but with Queen and Foos like melodies present within. The album also ends with 3 great tracks - Concrete rocks hard, Street Spirit is an excellent Radiohead cover and Love is not the Answer also recalls something from Radioheads Bends album. Everybody have a good Time is another excellent rocker with plenty of melody, Living each day Blind is, for me, 1 of their best power ballads to date. Even though 3 tracks on here sound rather like fillers in comparison, this album on the whole is a good enough return to form and proof that the band could still cut it. They've put out even better albums since but this 1 is worth checking out.
