Product Information
Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi's Oscar-winning animated film is based on Satrapi's graphic novel, which, in turn, is based on her life in pre- and post- revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The film veers between the personal and the political, tracing Satrapi's growth from child to rebellious, punk-loving teenager in Iran. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, and the background of the disastrous Iran/ Iraq war. At college in Europe she becomes politicised, and discovers drugs and sex. Because the situations are always seen through her eyes and narrative, the film is never a polemic, but underneath its sometime humorous take on life is a serious, damning critique of the current Iranian regime, particularly its attitude towards women. In black and white with some colour. NOTE: This is the dubbed version, with English dialogue throughout.Product Identifiers
