The master at his best
Many of the best episodes of Groucho's show are featured, including the commercial with Harpo and Chico which was used on his show. Harpo also makes an appearance to plug his book, giving away copies. These glimpses of the brothers make me sad that they did not do a show with Harpo and Chico as the contestants. The winnings could have been donated, and they could have related to each other as they had on stage. But, Groucho is brilliant. While the shows were filmed, they were unscripted, and edited (some of the stag reels show why some of the material never made it onto the 1950s airways). Many of Groucho's guests are terrific in their own right, and Groucho plays off each one expertly. It is funny to see how he has to restrain himself when a guest such as Miss Finland, Miss USA, or a gorgeous platinum blond actress named Joy, present such opportunities which would not have worked then. Groucho quips that he would like to see one of the ladies after the show, and her response? "Promise?" Another was really taken with Fenneman, and he did not know how to handle her. If you like lightning fast wit, this is the show of all time, and these episodes are among the best.
