If you've seen Michael Caine in the timeless classics Alfie & Get Carter you will see in this DVD The Statement just what a marvellously subtle actor he can be in this out of character role as a hunted nazi war criminal. From beginning to end you'll be enthralled by this classy movie from academy award winning director Norman Jewison. Caine plays Pierre Broussard a man pursued by hit men and police for the atrocities he commited during WW2. With a brilliant supporting cast including Jeremy Northam, Tilda Swinton and Sir Alan Bates this hard hitting, political thriller will have you glued to the screen wondering who Broussard can trust, everyone it seems has a motive for wanting him dead. Caine gives a such a moving performance as the desperate and pathetic Broussard you almost find yourself sympathising with his loathsome character, he is desperatly trying to stay one jump ahead of his would be assasins. Tilda Swinton (The War Zone) proves yet again what a truly versatile actress she is & almost manages to steal the film from an enigmatic Charlotte Rampling. Some may find it a little slow for their tastes but I found the plot gradually increasing in pace until the climatic end. A thoroughly interesting a thought provoking film, in my opinion a must see.Read full review
