An old classic period drama
I vaguely remembered watching this series as a child and then later repeats but wanted to refresh my memory. While aspects of this series appear a little dated, Alan Dobie is excellent in the title role ably helped out by William Simons looking a little younger and plumper than in his Heartbeat days. The set contains all the episodes (excepting the pilot) of this Victorian police drama. Some of the crimes are a little different to those of today, which adds to its charm, but the motives remain the same. Good characters and guest stars including Fenella Fielding, Michael Elphick and a young Linda Robson together with excellent sets and costumes all add up to a perfect Sunday night drama.

Watched the original and it hadn't been repeated for some time. Just discovered Loveseys books and they are great. Can't understand why there aren't more on TV. One of the dvds is scratched that effect the viewing rest are ok

Good Fun
Missed this series when it was televised. Slightly old fashioned and occasionally the sets are more like stage sets than TV. Doesn't take itself terribly seriously but definitely worth the effort.
