Pretty In Pink was one of John Hughes' classic teen '80s movies. Unfortunately soundtracks of the time weren't always as great as their screen contemporaries, and this one is no exception. The majority of the songs featured in the movie are here - OMD's "If You Leave", New Order's "Shell Shock" and the original theme tune by The Psychedelic Furs (not the single remix from the charts). However, there are some notable omissions particularly Otis Reading's "Try A Little Tenderness" which Duckie danced to creating one of the main comedic moments from the film. I assume this was left out as this soundtrack seems to be geared toward New Wave which fits into Molly Ringwald's character persona and was a John Hughes favourite at the time. There are some puzzling additions including Belouis Some's "Round Round" and Suzanne Vega's "Left Of Centre" which aren't in the film itself, and sadly "Wouldn't It Be Good" is done by the Danny Hutton Hitters not the Nik Kershaw version we all know from the charts. However, there are some gems on there too - Echo & The Bunnymen's "Bring On The Dancing Horses" and The Smiths "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want". Generally, this isn't a bad soundtrack although it has been restricted by the decade in which is was issued (1980s soundtracks were very short and this only has ten tracks) and by John Hughes' obsession with Alternative/New Wave sounds of the time. However you liked the film including the music this soundtrack does compliment the DVD.Read full review
