I saw Paul Rodgers live in Glasgow in spring 2011 and he and his band played a back catalogue of Free and Bad company songs - all were outstanding! I bought this CD to remind myself what a great band Free were and was not disappointed. In fact I can't stop telling my friends about them. Every track on this CD is a cracker and a master class in how to play blues rock that is just SO cool. Paul Rodgers (vocals) is the ultimate front man with a perfect voice for this kind of music. He still is today! (Aged 61) Paul Kossoff (guitar) shows just how good a Gibson Les Paul can sound plugging straight into a Marshall valve amp. I play guitar in a 70s band ( www.reflector.uk.com ) and I can tell you that the art of using ONLY your guitar volume control to play either clean or crunchy overdrive gives incredible tone. Andy Fraser (bass) was only 15 when he joined Free but he shows his talent on this CD - the end part to Mr Big is still one of the best bass parts of all time. Simon Kirke (drums) plays powerfully but leaves lots of "space" in his drumming which proves the saying "less is more" He is perfect for Free (and Bad Company) - He is the drummer I'd have in my "dream band" (John Bonham a close second, Stewart Copeland a close third) Starnd out tracks? - All of them really....but a special mention for Heartbreaker (last track) - Now THAT is what I am talking about. If you are in a rock band - you HAVE to buy this CD. Unbelievable riffs, superb guitar tone, devastating vocals, rock solid back line. Free supported Led Zeppelin in the USA when they were still teenagers - a superb band - Nuff said.Read full review
This is the first time I have heard this CD, I know the classics as there were about when I was a teenager like Wishing well,All Right Now, My Brother Jake there was some good music about in the 70's.
I was in my teens when Free first released "Tons of Sobs",followed by "Fire and Water", two brilliant albums. Thirty years have passed, yet when I put this Cd on to the car stereo player it sounded as fresh and as solid as it did back then.Paul Rogers vocals cant be beat, the same goes for the excellent lead guitar of sadly passed Paul Kossof.Andy Fraser`superb bass lines and the stong drumminhg of Simon Kirk. This CD is a must have for any fan of the very best of British Blues. And also anyone who drives 1000 miles a week on the M5, M6, M40 and M25. Buy it Now !
Such a great collection of the biggest songs and best songs Free recorded in their time! Favourites range from all right now the single but there are some hidden gems such as wild indian woman and hunter...a great listen!
