This album was a bit of a shock in 1987 as the Cult thus far were known for a very effects-laden sound. I can remember listening to this for the first time and being blown away by its sheer energy. At least 50% of this is due to producer Rick Rubin who stripped the band back to their bare essentials and let them tap in to the pure spirit of rock n' roll - and it really worked. There is very little fluff on this album, and despite criticisms of it being a dummed down Led Zeppelin / AC/DC clone, it is a very honest record of a band breaking in to a musical direction that they obviously feel passionate about. The riffage and growled vocals make this rank alongside other classic rock albums that were an obvious influence. Its heavy and soulful without displaying anything like the buffant hair-spandex metal that dominated the rock scene then. It really is a timeless classic - why can't rock bands make music like this any more?Read full review
