I watched this old TV series back in the 1960s. In those days I watched them in black and white. Nice to see them in colour finally. But a shame such few episodes still survive in the archives. Perhaos the production values are not quite up to the 1980s Jeremy Brett episodes, but for its time in the late 60s, this was high end quality drama.

If you buy this title you're probably already a fan of the character or Peter Cushing - who is on marvellous form. The 6 episodes here (The Hound Of The Baskervilles is split into 2 parts) are admirably constructed around serious budget constraints. It's the usual recording format from its era: Over-lit video tape for interior sets and real film for exterior location shots. Sadly, the picture quality is abysmal. Smeary, low detail images typical of an unsympathetic DVD transfer. However, I don't think we'll see an improved version any time soon. A Bluray disc has been hinted at - but will they proceed? To my recall there were far more episodes made for the original series - of which these 6 remain. More have been found recently - but its a contractual nightmare as to who owns the rights to reproduce them. It's interesting to watch Peter Cushing's take on Holmes - his second bite of the cherry - re Baskerville - the Hammer film has far more edge. But the quality of the writing is inconsistent and inescapably dull. For Cushing and Conan Doyle completists only. Read full review

What a shame the short sighted BBC wiped the tapes of the majority of this series. The remaining episodes are a time capsule of 60's Television, and well worth a watch to see one of Britain's greatest actors (Peter Cushing) and a more than adequete Nigel Stock as Dr Watson. If like me, the Granada TV series is the ultimate Sherlock Holmes series, then you could be disappointed, after all NO ONE will ever match Brett and Hardwicke in my estimation, however, Cushing and Stock are well worth a view if only to see Sherlock done on the cheap..... Still good TV... if only they could find the missing episodes !.

It was a great boxset

Although some of the filming looks dated, Peter Cushing's version of Sherlock Holmes is second to none.
