New York City is shocked by a series of brutal murders and rumours exist that a rogue cop is responsible. The wife of Policeman Jack Forrest is found brutally murdered and he finds himself the prime suspect for the killings. Lead investigator Frank McCrae believes otherwise and a chance discussion about former policeman, Matt Cordell, leads McCrae to the strange circumstances surrounding Cordell's professional downfall, incarceration and death. McCrae is convinced Cordell has come back to life, and is taking out his vengeance on the city officials who were responsible for his death. Forrest and McCrae set out to solve the mystery before the Maniac Cop kills again. Maniac Cop is a great b-movie, directed by William Lustig and produced by Larry Cohen. Although panned by critics at the time, it is a classic horror with a seemingly unstoppable killer. Robert Z'Dar plays the title role, and he is excellent. Although he doesn’t actually have a single line in the whole film, Z’Dar has the physical stature and distinctive facial features to make Officer Matt Cordell the intimidating figure he is. He doesn’t need to say anything – his presence and actions do the talking for him. In my opinion, this all adds to the appeal of the movie and maintains the undead, supernatural presence of Cordell. As was probably more common at the time, there is not much gratuitous gore in the movie. Deaths are violent but usually involve excessive force rather than the need for blood. They all contribute to emphasising the power and rage of the Maniac Cop rather than psychopathic tendencies. Overall, well worth checking out. The movie has certainly dated in terms of the special effects and isn’t the deepest of concepts but Z’Dar plays the role of his career and delivers an outstanding performance. Maniac Cop, one of the all time classic chillers from the 80's. A refreshing classic that not all Police and Cops protect and serve and as the film lists, you have the right to remain silent....forever! This film brings you a bad guy this time by way of a Law Enforcement Police Officer whom due to being stitched up, imprisioned and brutally tortured, sets about seeking his vengence. Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) plays Jack Forrest whom is also framed for his Wife's murder and then used as an escape goat for the vicious slains. A taunt horror thriller, Maniac Cop is not to be missed. Don't forget, not all Cops are here to help!
Maniac Cop is a great exploitation film. It has some truly inspired moments. Bruce Campbell is great and the Maniac Cop himself is a worthy creation in the horror genre. Most people will avoid this and they shouldn't, because for the budget and limitations it's a great flick. Fix a nice big bowl of popcorn and enjoy a great horror cheapie.
