The problem with this film is that Peter O'Toole as Lord Jim is never convincingly real. To me he always appears to be working out the way he'll play his lines, so they become mannered and studied. There's even a feeling that he wants the "T E Lawrence" magic to emerge to save an otherwise misguided performance. He just doesn't fit his persona into the character of Jim. Trouble is, he's such a compelling screen presence that he kind of gets away with his effect on the screen without actually playing the role of Lord Jim I wonder how Albert Finney would have come across in the role - a very creative and original actor, he would certainly have got much more variety and drama out of Jim's character. Nevertheless because Joseph Conrad is such a masterful writer of great yarns, director Richard Brooks does manage to give us good couple of hours' entertainment, superbly capped by a fascinating, untypical and highly intelligent performance by James Mason.Read full review

Great golden oldie. Pity about sad ending. A man trying very hard to overcome his past mistakes. He was triumphant in this respect.
An excellent film, one of Peter O' Tooles best films. Similar in grandeur to Lawrence Of Arabia. A fine cast and I am glad to have managed to obtain it, if you enjoy good films and are sitting in on a Sunday afternoon and there is very little of interest on the television. If you have this film in your collection, invite a few friends and family over and sit down down to watch Lord Jim, you won't regret it.
There are certain actors that have their own unique style & are so consistently brilliant that it is rare they will do a bad performance. Peter O'Toole is such an actor, if you see his name in the credits of any movie you will not be dissappointed. The cast in this film is excellant:James Mason, Curt Sturgens, Eli Wallah & Jack Hawkins....say no more! The story: Peter O'Tool,A merchant marine officer who discraces himself after over reacting to a ruplture of the hull on the ship he is charting, then finds he has adbondoned it without really meaning to do that! He trys to compensate this failure by helping some natives conquer their repressed situation with an organised syndicate that oppressess them which in the end costs him dearly! But being a man of his word he understands the price & finally redeems himself with the Ultimate sacrifice! It is this ironic ending that raises the question in your mind:could you stand by your word to such a level to honour it after being disgraced? Food for thought.....the soundtrack to this movie is also well worth getting hold of!Read full review
