An excellent transfer. I was very pleasantly surprised by how good this film is. I had not seen it before so I was buying blind, as it were, so I'm very happy with the result.

Filmed in gritty black and white where every shadow, every shade from grey to black, conveys a mood. This is film noir of the finest quality. First shown in 1949, it is perhaps Samuel Fuller's masterpiece. It has overtones of the "red scare" which swept America in the immediate post-war years in a burst of paranoia that was to be found in many films of that era. Richard Widmark is the leading man who plays Skip McCoy, a character with few redeeming features, who is a pickpocket. One day on a train, he takes the wallet of Candy, a beautiful brunette. In that wallet are frames of microfilm that would be useful to "the other side" (the Russkies are not named), and he has to spend much of the film fighting off Candy's boyfriend's associates -who are willing to stop at nothing- and the police who do not like "two bit pickpockets". The film is authentic in style, too. Demob suits and fedoras, femme fatales with lace hankies are the order of the day. If you really want to get a movie "like they used to make 'em", get "Pickup On South Street". It'll take you back to those mean streets along the waterfront..... GRRRREAT!!Read full review
Terrific 1949 thriller about a pickpocket who inadvertently steals some top-secret microfilm while it is on its way to a Red agent. Richard Widmark is great as the cocky young thief, with Jean Peters as the courier he robs and the wonderful Thelma Ritter as a stool-pigeon shrewdly building up the money needed to pay for a posh funeral for herself! Written and directed by Samuel Fuller.
