A great series from the end of the golden era of british tv drama when they were 'fully serviced' internally. The show is detective series in space, more about investigation than car chases, or in this case, space shuttle chases. It does contain space stations and moonbases, but a show in space would, wouldn't it. The show can look cheap on occasions to modern eyes, but the miniature effects are still remarkable for their time and the money spent . The series regular cast contain British stalwarts. This dvd set contains all 9 episodes of the series, interviews with writers Chris Boucher (Series Creator) and Philip Martin. Introductions by Trevor Cooper and a long selection of mute miniature effects footage, which is great and a selection of material from the only remaining studio recording reel, which is a delight,if you are interested in seeing how studio-based dramas were made at that time. Doctor Who fans will be happy as you get to see many cast and crew from that show appear in Star Cops and the bonus material. The set is not without it's problems. The sound quality on some episodes is quite bad and there are serious problems with distortion on the bonus footage and intros with Trevor Cooper. However it is worth getting this hidden gem of SF/Police drama, if you can.

  • Great writing, with plausible situations and mysteries set in a realistic conception of space.

This was a short lived series on BBC2 back in 1987, with only nine episodes. I first saw it as a rebroadcast on an American PBS station in 1988 or '89, and was instantly hooked. The strength of this series was the writing, providing fully formed personalities, and intriguing mysteries. While the production values were typical BBC "good enough", the show could have used a bit more money in the zero gravity scenes. Still, they played it straight and I think did a very credible job of world building a near-future conception of what a real human presence in space would look like. Again, this was a 1987 production, so Americans viewing it will pick up the occasional BBC America Bashing from that era. But all things considered, it is relatively mild, and as an American viewing it in 2020, I have to say it caused me to chuckle a few times. It is really such a shame the series wasn't renewed for another 2 or 3 seasons, as it was dealing with real issues that might crop up once Mankind moves into space. I especially enjoyed the last episode "Little Green Men and Other Martians", which explores a scientific hoax, designed to spur further research into extraterrestrial life. A sort of "Piltdown Man" in space. The end of the episode set up a return for the show, but sadly, that didn't happen. Despite its shortcomings in the production department, I can heartily recommend this show to anyone who enjoys well imagined speculative fiction.

  • Before it's time

The series was ahead if it's time cast were good especially David Calder. Technology such voice activated software linked to Internet algorithms and ÀI in "Box" now current, and planned Chinese mega space station and Elon Musk's planned large rocket Mars colony programme shows how this was ahead of it s time. Manages realism and science and rounded characters a good series that should have had another.

  • It's great.

Star cops is ace but isn't the replacement for doctor who as it stated at the time. It's a fantastic series that holds it's own. If you want to know ki-led Dr who..... Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chinballs . Fact.

  • A cracking BBC series from the past...

As always, the BBC managed to put out a great sci-fi related series, which is engaging and thoughtful! I'm not a 'cop show' kind of guy (Doctor Who is my bag!) but I really enjoy Star Cops! A classic series from Auntie Beeb!

  • Believable and enjoying stories.

Slight problem with the volume. Has to higher than other DVDs. Other than that I find the DVD's very entertaining

  • Top Cops in the Stars

Great Sci-Fi series from Chris Boucher (4th Doctor era writer for Doctor Who), Star Cops is almost a sequel to the early 70's series Moonbase 3.
