NO SPOILERS The year is 2080 mankind has been ravaged by nuclear war, cities lay in ruin, poverty is at an all time high and the gap between the filthy rich and the desperately poor has never been so vast. Advanced Cyborgs fitted with A.I chips have been created to look and act like humans, they are used as slaves to perform ALL tasks their owners require. Unfortunately they have a very short lifespan and some cyborgs have begun to rebel against this. A team of agents are needed to round up and dispose of expired, rouge units. The story revolves around R, (Yoo Ji-tae) an agent in a team hired for this reason. R has fallen for a Cyborg, Ria (Seo Rin) who is about to expire and he will do anything to extend her life even at the cost of his job. Directed by Min Byung-Chun and filmed on location in south Korea this is one of the best sci-fi films I have ever seen. As the director explains this film began when he read a newspaper artical about an 80 year old man who had committed suicide after his dog died. His body wasn't found for another 3 months. A story of the cruel world we live in, that anyone could die now without someone elses knowage. What will it be like in the future? Moved by such a story he started work on "Natural City". I wish my mind worked like that. This is an amazing film. Im really not a big fan of CGI I believe that it has it's place in many films but far to often it's used to death, especially by big budget U.S productions (probably one of the reasons for the big budget) where you may as well be staring at a blue screen for 90 minutes. Min Byung-chun on the other hand has used it to it's full potential. Filmed on real streets using real people he has then flawlessly blended reality with fiction and created a cinematic masterpiece which to me is no less than beautiful. Filled with breathtaking scenery, that hasn't all been programmed by a computer, this epic shows amazing contrasts that can be related to life today. Rich, poor, love, hate, natural, man made. What does it mean to be human? Sorry went a bit deep then. As you can tell i'm into this film, but what else can I say it's deserving of some real credit im just doing my part to spread the word to whoever wants to listen. QUICK FACT- The name "Natural City is not actually the name of the city, it came from the name of one of the characters in the film called, Cyon. This is a biblical name meaning "land of heaven" and the natural city in the film has got something to do with Cyon. The director didn't want to give away exactly what the natural city is, so I won't but if you get the dvd the answer is in the special features. It would be impossible for me to say which was my favourite part, but one of my favourite images is of this huge ship flying above the city. A message is being read out that if you join the ship Muyoga it will take you to Koyo the planet of oblivion where you can forget all your memories. A constant reminder to the poor and hungry just how bad things are down there, or maybe a goal to aim for? Thanks for reading it means a lot to know that someone is listening. For more comments on other asian films see my reviews, i'm adding more all the time so check back now and again. Many thanks, KesRead full review
