A “Tale of Two Sisters” is an Asian horror movie basic on a traditional Korean folk tale. It follows the story of two sisters who have just been released from a psychiatric hospital and have returned home to their oblivious father and cruel stepmother. There is a cold, foreboding feeling to the house and it is not long before strange things start happening… Noises can be heard in the middle of the night and frightening ghosts start to appear. The whole house starts to become affected by these strange occurrences, but we do not know if there is really an evil presence in the house, or if it’s the girl’s stepmother playing cruel mind-games, or if it is all just a hallucination. All the events finally come to a head, leading to a confrontation were we finally learn the horrifying truth and the dark secret hidden within the walls of the house becomes known... I am a huge fan of Asian horror and after being described as the ‘most frightening film since Ring’ I was intrigued by this movie. It is a mix of psychological horror, a ghost story and the drama of a disfunctional family trying to conceal a dark, tragic past. This movie focuses more on getting inside your head and unsettling you rather than shoving a lot of gory scenes in your face. It keeps you guessing the whole way through and you are never completely sure what is going on. I would definitely recommend watching this one more than once so you can better understand the complex story. I purchased the special edition 2 disc set which has loads of extra features from deleted scenes, to interviews with the cast, and an in depth documentary with the director. These all prove interesting after watching the film, and offer some explanation to the events of the film and to the film making process. Buy it NOW!!!!Read full review
I was told a long time ago that this was one of the best Tartan Asia films. It has everything a twisted fairytale should have the princess the wicked step mother and the ill fated king. From the very first scene you get the idea that something isn't quite right and your in for a rollercoaster ride. The main character appears very dark and evil but you find your self feeling sorry for her and her sister who is very loveable. The father of the film is played perfectly portraying the struggling man of the house desperately trying to keep his family together. What I loved most about this film is that you never know whether you are watching a ghost story or a thriller and it keeps you guessing up until the very last scene. With so many twists and turns and hidden bits you won't notice the first time round this film will make you wanna watch over and over.Read full review
I bought this film after watching it on film 4. I had missed the start which made the plot confusing but I definitly wanted to own it. Once it arrived and I watched it for a second time the whole way through it has definitly become one of my favorite films. Korean, in sub-titles this film has a seriously twisted plot (the orignal grudge) and seriously twists and turns to keep you on your toes. A must see film
