About this product

Product Information

Fred Zinneman directs this excellent biographical drama about the conflicts faced by Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) when King Henry VIII asks him to break with the Pope and grant him a divorce. Based on Robert Bolt's stage play, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS is a powerful, cerebral story, supported by an excellent cast and characterization. Vanessa Redgrave would later participate in a well-received made-for-television remake in 1988. This biographical drama earned eight Academy Award nominations and six wins, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Paul Scofield), and Best (Adapted) Screenplay.

  • A Film of Quality and Human Conscience

At the 1967 Academy Awards, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS won 7 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Actor (Paul Scofield), Best Director (Fred Zinnemann), Best Screenplay (Robert Bolt), Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design. Supporting performers Robert Shaw and Wendy Hiller were also nominated but did not win. All this does not happen by accident or coincidence. This is truly a fine motion picture. It is a story of one man's conscience (Sir Thomas More) and love of God over the earthly rewards offered by King Henry VIII and his less than honorable enablers/supporters. Originally this was a play written by Robert Bolt which was later adapted to the screen. As a play, it was quite a success both in London and New York (and elsewhere) due to its themes which all humans can relate to and appreciate. There have been times when I have read where others writing on current political scandals have used A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS as a comparative touchstone. Paul Scofield gives a wonderfully nuanced performance as Sir Thomas More and is backed up by a first rate cast. Back in the early 1970s, this film was shown on American television (the NBC network I believe) as a Thanksgiving Day holiday movie for the family to watch for two years running. Thanksgiving Day is a quintessential American holiday and the fact that an American television network would choose this English film speaks volumes.

THIS Classic Movie explains the separation of the English from the Pope in Rome it a way that shows the personal struggle of Sir. Thomas Moore. It shows what life was like in that time. The dialogue is outstanding as well as the costumes and locations. Every actor is at the top of their game. Great Movie.

  • A Man For All Seasons

This movie tells it like it is. King Henry the VIII held lots of power (even over the church). Those opposed to the King were beheaded. Sir Thomas Moore was one such person and met that end.

  • Wonderful film, in good condition, though perhaps slightly dark.

The print seems slightly dark--at least from my memory of it. Otherwise, it plays perfectly. It's a film I have long wanted to own.
