About this product

Product Information

The classic comic strip and cartoon hero comes to life in Robert Altman's film adaptation of the adventures of the spinach-munching sailor. After he's thrown from his ship during a storm, Popeye (Robin Williams) finds refuge in a quaint seaside town. There he rents a room from the Oyls and meets their daughter Olive (the perfectly cast Shelley Duvall). Olive is engaged to Captain Bluto (Paul Smith), a bully and ruffian who is in charge of collecting taxes for the mysterious Commandant. Popeye, who was orphaned at an early age, is in the midst of a desperate search for his missing father, but what he doesn't realize is that the shipwreck has brought him unexpectedly close to his final destination. In bringing his own distinct vision to E. C. Segar's legendary hero, Altman creates an atmosphere that is breezy, loose, and filled with slapstick shenanigans. Williams portrays Popeye with a physically comic flair that is both honest and energetic--as do the rest of the cast members, including frequent Altman contributors Duvall, Paul Dooley, and David Arkin. Harry Nilsson's songs add to the lighthearted affair, making POPEYE an enjoyable family viewing experience all around.

  • ROBIN WILLIAMS COMEDICALLY LIGHTS UP THE SCREEN HERE IN THIS WONDERFULLY FUN POPEYE'S 1930'S ORIGIN STORY!

HUGE Popeye fan from the comic books and the 1930's cartoons! And it was SO cool to see a young Robin Williams, a truly gifted comedic genius and charismatically endearing actor, just do a simply amazing job here portraying the legendary spinach-eating sailor and bar-room brawler! Williams' wonderfully dances, sings and gets off some really funny moments here, but I just wished that the director/studio heads would've let Robin Williams do even MORE, though. The movie itself though, is set behind a way more darker American depression-era tone than the way more colorfully hopeful and way more popularly famous 1940's era Popeye cartoons that most kids grew up on in syndicated reruns. But this incredible Popeye film is still pretty faithful to Popeye's very first appearance from the 1930's newspaper comics' Thimble Theatre syndicated cartoon, as he enters a silly run downed sea-faring port town and becomes deeply involved with Olive Oyl's family. I just wished that the musical score for this movie was way better. But I still do bust out laughing way hard at the "HE'S LARGE" and the "I'M POPEYE: THE SAILOR" songs that're just exceptionally well done here by the late great Shelly Duvall and the incredible comedic giant and legend, Mr. Robin Williams. Thanks for all the endless laughs and adventures, Robin Williams. Love you and miss you.

  • 'Twas direct & honest. Can't improve on that!!

More of an adult movie than expected. Followed the old comic strip characters well for us old folks. Reeked of nostalgia (a good thing for this ole lady).

  • 4 year old loves them . Sits in front of the TV from start to finish.

Cartoons are a little grainy. I guess they couldn't clean them up.

  • :D

I dont know about anyone else but POPEYE with Robin Willams is one of my favorite movies with the songs in it too. I also like the silliness of the movie also. I think everyone needs some silliness sometimes in their lives.

  • Popeye, a cartoon come to life

Only Robin Williams could have played Popeye, and Shelly Duvall was born to be Olive Oyl. This is an especially fun to watch cartoon, brought to life with real people. The Music was very well done too. I was entertained!

  • Great Movie for Kids!

I should have expected more from Robin, but let's face it - this movie is for kids, and it does very well at that. Of course, I have not been a kid for a few decades.
