About this product

Product Information

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau again team with Wilder in the third film version of the Hecht-MacArthur classic comedy. The familiar story finds hard-nosed editor Walter Burns (Matthau) trying every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter Hildy Johnson from leaving the newspaper business to get married. When Earl Williams (Austin Pendleton) an anarchist facing execution, breaks out of prison, Walter has found the perfect hook to keep Johnson in Chicago for a little longer. The escaped convict suddenly pops up in the press room and Hildy hides him in a rolltop desk until he's able to get a location for an exclusive interview. Despite the pleas of Molly Malloy (Carol Burnett), a prostitute in love with Williams, the newsmen refuse to let him go. As Hildy begins looking into the activities of the Sheriff (Vince Gardenia) and the Mayor (Harold Gould), it seems like they've decided to execute the wrong man. Matthau, Lemmon and Martin Gabel as a lunatic psychiatrist give wonderful performances.

  • Movie is great

My biggest complaint is that I wish I'd gotten the Blu-ray instead. Movie was in "full screen" not "wide screen" mode which didn't really surprise me any, but I would have preferred the wide screen aspect ratio instead, but what bothered me more than the aspect ratio was that the picture quality wasn't quite as high as I've seen from other DVDs with this one having more pixelation than it should. Movie itself is a great classic and has been made several times, once in 1931 using the same title, once in 1940 with a gender swap called His Girl Friday, this version and another made in the 80's or 90's called "Switching Channels" following the same gender swap from the 1940's version while changing from a newspaper company to a cable news network. This version is hard to beat with Odd Couple casts reunited again making it still a great flick to watch even with my minor grievances.
