In a grim future America, Maggie (Bridget Fonda), a beautiful young street punk, is about to be executed for killing a cop during a robbery, and is given the choice between death or becoming a government assassin. She accepts the latter and is trained in all manner of martial (and feminine) arts. She ably carries out her deadly assignments, and is groomed to become a powerful killer. Maggie is given a new identity, becomes the seductive Claudia, and is sent to Venice, California, where she begins her new life. But the training takes only too well: the formerly amoral murderess proceeds to fall in love with a photographer (Dermot Mulroney) and develop a conscience. Now she wants out, but the government isn't about to let her go without a fight. Very entertaining!!!
Bridget Fonda, was the best in this action packed thriller. From the start to the end, there was mystery to keep you interested. Bridget (Maggie) plays a misfit convicted of murder, and sentenced to death. Gabriel and Anne transform her into a trained assassin, when she accepts the choice from a convert government. Maggie is well trained, but a love interest comes into the picture. And gives her a outlook on what a normal life could be. Nothing deep, but entertaining.
Disk is two sided: wide screen and standard. Watching standard side, disk stopped running near the end. I had cleaned the disk prior to viewing. Fortunately the wide screen side played until the end. I bought this specifically to compare to Le Femme Nikita. This is a close copy of the earlier film. Fonda's portrayal of a delinquent is better that Parrilaud's. Le Femme Nikita, however is the better movie, although both strain credulity. Fonda tries too hard to be Zena Warrior Princess who can thrash much larger opponents. The weapons handling is not well done nor the choice of weapons. As an escape in the complete suspension of disbelief it's worth an evenings watch; particularly if you've seen the Luc Beeson version.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

American version is very effective on it's own.
I always liked Bridget Fonda in anything she does, especially in films like "Single White Female" (1992) and " Jackie Brown" (1997). Here, she plays an elite, Hi-Tech assassin who must kill for the government in order to live. Fonda handles the wild identity-swings of her character quite well. Some people say she looks too cute to be a cold-blooded killer, but, remember, looks can kill, literally. Though the original "La Femme Nikita" (1990) packed a wallop and Anne Parillaud's performance had a much wider range, Bridget's portrayal was extremely entertaining, nonetheless. The pop music by Nina Simone and the score by Hans Zimmer add to the film's atmosphere as well. I thought this was a very effective thriller in it's own right.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
