I'll start by saying, as someone else has said, this movie is for intelligent people. It's a cerebral thriller that has enough blood and guts at the necessary times but doesn't over do it. If you're looking for your common hockey mask, hack and slay, Saturday night special then this is not the movie for you. This movie makes you think. What do we really know about the things below the surface of our planet? It bases itself on some things that have never truly been explained in relation to entire cultures disappearing overnight as well as what happened to the dinosaurs. In the same vein as The Crazies, this is a possibility. While it may not be the only one, it is a possibility and if something makes you think and answer the questions within yourself, it can't be that bad, can it? "Do you wanna see somethin'?" Check out this movie. Entertaining.Read full review
1998's "Phantoms", a horror story based on the 1983 novel of the same title by Dean Koontz, would have been a more enjoyable fright-fest if only I hadn't read the book! Of course, few movies can come close to the books on which they're based as far as entertainment value; also, no movie can possibly contain every scene described in the book...I just wish this one had tried a little harder-it had so much potential (sigh). Directed by Joe Chappelle, and with Dean Koontz actually writing the screenplay, I was expecting a bit more-maybe even too much. The first half of the flick is pretty suspenseful, with a lot of surprise scenes to keep you jumping. However, as the movie progresses, much of it becomes too obvious even to folks who haven't read the book. The acting's not bad, though I would have chosen someone more mature than Ben Affleck for Sheriff Hammond's role. Also, I would have included more of the characters that were in the book, my favorite being Chief Deputy Tal Whitman. Oh well, you can't win 'em all... Distinguished British actor Peter O'Toole stars as Dr. Timothy Flyte; Joanna Going is cast as Dr. Jennifer Pailey, and Rose McGowan is her sister Lisa. Rated R for language and frightening sequences.Read full review
This movie is so cool! I can’t recommend it enough! Crazy thing is, most people have never heard of it. And yes, this movie was one of the main inspirations for the first Silent Hill video game

I love all Dean Koontz and this movie is so close to the book that it truly is a must have for any Dean Koontz fan. Even if you have never read one of his books, if you just love the action packed, edge of your seat type of movie, you will love this! The movie starts with sisters on thier way home to find that everyone in town has disappeared. Upon investigating, they find some bodies bloated as if some plague has hit. Mysterious things are happening all around them. Finally they get some help from law enforcement who are just as confused as they are. In the end you find that all you were thinking, all that you can imagine is nothing compared to the reality. This is a movie that keeps you guessing until the end. Excellent cast of caracters, great plot, all around one of my favorite movies!Read full review
