A comedy about the inhabitants of Tulley More, a small Irish town with a population of fifty-two and dwindling. When Jackie and Michael discover that someone in their town has won the national lottery, they intend to uncover the lucky individual and talk him into sharing the jackpot with them. Trouble arises when they discover it's good old Ned Devine, and no longer is he one of the living. A man wins a huge lottery but dies from the shock of it. Two of his friends turn the tragedy into a triumph for their small Irish village.
This is one of the funniest movies I've seen. It is also sad and heart-warming. I showed it to my World Literature classes because it is set in Ireland; and they liked it so much that I bought each of them a copy for Christmas! Defect in the DVD
The picture is very small. The opening credits fit our screen and when the actual movie started it went small. We tried to fix the problem but couldn't. I felt we weren't computer literate enough. A friend is visiting who is computer literate and he tried to enlarge the picture and couldn't. He compared it to another DVD that we had that had been manufactured prior to the Ned Devine movie and it fit the screen perfectly. There must be a defect with this movie. The original price was still on the DVD and I wonder if the price reflected the defect of the DVD. We love this movie and I was excited to purchase it. Sorry it was defected. Favorite Irish movie
Its funny, sad, heartwarming, and clever. You can just imagine living in the village with all these characters. The scenery is beautiful, filmed on The Isle of Man. The only thing that bothers me is that it is in widescreen format. It cuts off the very tops of the heads in close-ups. I've tried to change settings but nothing works. Waking Ned Devine is So Funny, delightfully written, beautifully shot over the gorgeous terrain of Ireland, and has such deliciously eccentric characters you can’t help but fall in love with these people and this movie. I actually bought it as a Christmas present for a couple who love to laugh as well as play the lottery & but had never seen this 20-year-old movie. I ended up buying a copy of it for them...and then buying this copy of it for my household. My husband and I watched it immediately...and laughed just as uproariously this time as 20 years ago when it first came out. A great movie for time with close family & friends
The thoroughly engaging tale of one man who discovers the winning jackpot lottery ticket in his small village, and how he gradually evolves from a selfish schemer to ultimately being willing to give it all up to do the right thing, and masterminding a plan to allow the entire village to benefit. It’s about grimes giving way to caring, selfishness being overcome by service, and choosing the greater good over individual gain. The characters in this movie are SO real!! They are endearing characters that many of us can relate to. The story line is played out with great humor... you just have to love these people and want them all to get rich!
