PLOT: British "atomic" spies giving secrets to the Communists. Philby, MacClean, Burgess, and Blunt are 4 Cambridge Classmates who decided 'Communism would save the world'.... they cleverly are able to pass atomic and spy secrets to the Russians..they are soon to be discovered. This is about Blunt who is Ian Richardson who is the Queens Art Expert. He is also a spy. Burgess is Anthony Hopkins is very good as the Gay Spy who is also an alcoholic who is the "Escape" partner to MacClean... When the code name of HOMER who is actually MaCClean is soon to be discovered...McClean is being followed and just short of being arrested ....Burgess and McClean make the escape to Russia to avoid the fate of discovery. This is pretty good. Ian Richardson is the very arrogant art expert who both loves Burgess and helps him leave the UK. interesting and better than expected. this was a UK tv movie. The CAST is better than the screen play. The focus here is the Gay Relationship between Ian /Blunt and Burgess /Hopkins. I give it 4 out of 5 for better than average of this real live spy event. Kind of strange in format, this was a British "television movie" intended for broadcast first, then for theatrical distribution outside of the UK, then for television use worldwide. It has wound up as a fairly popular DVD, and is the unvarnished tale of the Communist penetration of the upper ranks of British society, the use of "protect your friends from your country" reasoning, and the Communist use of conscience over reason or common sense. True, documented, and out and out strange, it's not the most engrossing, but it is the reality of the cold war era, and worth use in helping the younger generations understand that time period.
