Surprised how much I had forgotten about the structure of the first episodes. How much the flashbacks, duplicity and rage Tony displayed in the psych office provided the means to exploring his character. Much like the flashbacks for Brando in the Godfather. Nice.

Being a fan of the Godfather series, I wasn't giving The Sopranos a whole lot of head turn because nothing could top the original "Mob" family. After a bored Sunday evening, I rented the first Disc of Season 1. I was blown away at the level of complexity and dialogue this series had to offer. The writters really outdid themselves in just about every episode leading to the Season Finale. Season 1 was excellent, but compared to Season's 2 and 4 leading up to 5.... this is almost mediocre. But to see how it all started, the First season of The Sopranos is top notch!
The Sopranos brings back a lot of memories of my childhood. I grew up in a Italian family and neighborhood in a town near Phila Pa. We were not "mobbed up", but I knew a lot of the south philly wiseguys. The story bring home a lot of real things they do, but it also shows Tony and Carmello trying to do the right thing by Meadow and A.J. He has a lot of problems being "the Boss" both on the street and in his own household. David Chase did a masterful fob writing this story and I only wish a major motion picture could be made along the "Godfather" lines, but HBO has done okay. Everyone does not have HBO and can not enjoy all the problems, mistakes, joy, happiness, and everyday life of this family. The characters Christopher, Dr. Melfi, Paulie, Janice,Junior,Silvio and a "Big Pussy" all are very good in their roles. I enjoy watching them over and over. I hope to get all six seasons complete.Read full review
Gotta love the loud mouthed gangsters! If you're from New York too, youknow what I mean. Typical Italian, NY Mafia persona (although NJ based), the acting is incredible! You really fell like the movie is a real life caught on film! The acting, the make-up, the gore, its all one great package. I haven't missed an episode yet and miss it when its out of season, but I always sit idley by, waiting for it to air again. It's kinda tricky though, just as you think someone going to get whacked, something going to blow up, or whatever, it doesn't, so its keeping you on your toes all the time. Pretty cool!
Sopranos, wow. I have not had HBO in a decade. I had no clue they had thier own series of shows. I completely lost interest in TV since the bigging of the 'reality' shows. Low budget, crap, imho. Scooting through the ol remote one night I came accross the Soprano's show on some off base channel. I still have Cable, for internet access, so the tv comes on once in a while as it is part of the basic package. I bought the complete first season of the Sopranos, six dvd's, four episodes per dvd and watched all of them in two days. No comercials, fast forward throught the credits, dvr style, nice. I have since ordered season two and three. I'm hooked, should be done with the whole series through year six in about a month. Only problem is what do I watch then? I see a few other series, like deadwood and six feet under. I guess I'll have to trade these off for one of those. Don't care for sex in the city.Read full review
This series is just awesome, fantastic characters , great acting and well shot and edited. The characters are so real that it seems a documentary.

I am a HUGE mob fan, have been and always will be. The Godfather is the epitomy of mob films, so when HBO decided to bring on a series about the mob, I was all for it. Upon watching it, I was a little taken aback, a mob boss going to a psych? After watching and listening, this series is one of THE best ever written. If you are trying to decide whether or not to watch/buy/rent/ or see this series, it is not for families with little children. The language is graphic, the scenes are graphic, everything about this is graphic, and THAT is what sets it apart from the rest of the mob films. It's real life, with real life problems, only 10 times larger than the average family.
This was one of the best shows of his time very entertaining. You can't wait till the next show . It's very easy to get involved with all the characters. Gandalfini was awesome!

This series is highly engaging. First off, the profanity and violence is horrific (mostly the language) but, we're talking mob mentality here. Under the tough veneer, all characters are extremely vulnerable in many ways. If you pay close attention you will observe profound truths about spirituality. There is a war between good and evil on this planet and Sopranos reflects that in each episode, which is why it's so addictive. Edie Falco is amazing as Tony's Catholic wife, so torn between knowing right from wrong but admittedly selling out for material/worldly gain. Free will and a conscience, equals our daily balancing of the fulcrum. Mr. Chase did a great job on this one.

this is my most favorite season ever of the sopranos. Why? because it has my all-time favorite character in it, Brendan Filone. The way he messes up and accidentally causes a truck driver to get shot, resulting in his own demise as a punishment makes this season the absolute best. I love all the sopranos seasons, but this is by far the best of them all. Brendan Filone is my alltime favorite character and he has such an awesome character arc overall. His execution scene is one of the greatest scenes ever made. Uncle Junior orders Mikey Palmice to whack him for his truck hijacking shenanigans. It's the ultimate moment in the whole series for me. When taking a bath, under awesome background music, Brendan is shot clean through the eye by Mikey Palmice. That is the greatest scene ever made in the sopranos. The best choreographed stuff ever is in this season. There's also lots of other awesome whackings. Mikey Palmice, Chucky Signore, Jimmy Altieri, Donny Paduana, Emil Kolar, and lots of others get clipped in this season. It's the absolute greatest and most exciting and impactful of all the seasons. I seriously love the character of Brendan Filone and he's the main reason why I think so highly of this season. His execution scene is 10/10 and the Moe Greene Special is the best way for a character to get whacked. The best episode in this season is "denial, anger, acceptance," but the rest of them are excellent as well. I don't think any of the other seasons even come close to the level of awesomeness emitted by this season, but they were alright, i presume. Of course, all the other seasons are good in their own right, except for the fourth season. The first season is without a doubt the greatest season by a long shot and nothing will change that, ever. There will be lots of shows that come out and have come out but nothing will ever, ever comprehend the excellence of the first season of the sopranos. I can't possibly go more in-depth. The major reason why I loved the first season the most is that it concentrated heavily on the people in Tony's crew rather than just Tony and the boring aspects of his life which we see in season four. Brendan Filone is my ultimate favorite character, a screwup with a drug habit, who gets whacked. Then there's Chris, another loose cannon. Paulie, a maniacal earner in the crew. Silvio, a more calm fellow with a hidden agenda-type characteristic. Big Pussy Bompensiero, Tony's best pal, and a secret snitch. Jimmy Altieri, the capo turned rat by the end of the season. Mikey Palmice and Chucky Signore, Uncle Junior's evil right hand henchmen. There's just so much awesomeness in this season. Other than the fact that it started it all, it practically has it all. There's absolutely nothing I'd want to change about this season. It has all my favorite characters and character developments, stuff that is lacking in later seasons. I absolutely hated the fourth season, for example, because it didn't have as much excitement and more importantly, characters getting whacked. The first season has it all. It has all the excitement, all the hits, all the awesome phrases and mob talk, everything. The first season is excellence defined. I can't think of any bad points about the first season, it's just so darn perfect. So much awesome stuff happens in this season that all the other seasons fail to reach this level of awesomeness. Brendan Filone will always be my favorite character from my favorite show. This season is pure excellence.Read full review
