Product Information

In July 1969, the eyes of the world were on the Apollo 11 moon landing--but the world would have watched blank television screens if not for the hard work of a group of Australians manning the Parkes Radio Telescope, one of the largest dishes in the world. In THE DISH, a dramatization of the events surrounding the telecast or the space mission, Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill) and Al Burnett (Patrick Warburton) try to hold their crew together through calamities and crises ranging from dangerously high winds to a sudden power failure that cuts off contact with the distant astronauts, forcing the team to impersonate Neil Armstrong for the benefit of the visiting American ambassador. While the crew frantically prepares for the big moment, relaying the footage to televisions across the world, the people of Parkes celebrate their part in this momentous historical event. One of the most critically and commercially successful films ever to come out of Australia, THE DISH is a rousing, feel-good movie that succeeds both because of its perfectly formed characters and because of a heartwarming tone that illustrates that working for a common goal is the highest calling in life.

  • For those of us that lived through the sixties, this movie gives a whole new perspective on nostalgia.

From the opening scene to the final frames "The Dish" takes you back to a day when America was still great. In one epic event, its people and the world were galvanized into joy by the greatest achievement of technology and the human spirit ever in the course of human history of it's day, and possibly for all time. Not produced in Hollywood, but by an Australian film company, there is a mischievous 'un-American' outlook that adds both humor and poignancy to the story line. Break out the popcorn and revisit one of the greatest events in our lifetimes with a well crafted look at "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" - you may have been one of the estimated 450 million who watched it live, and if so, you will enjoy this film and your memories of July 21, 1969.

  • A nice Family Movie and educational as well

Just about all of us know the story of the Moon landing so it is kind of nice to experience this story from a different perspective. It's a heart warming story set in a small town in Australia. a Dish and the People operating it. A Dish that turned out to play a vital role in the Moon Landing.
