Hes like a child.

A great extension to the original Films
I'm still watching the entire set of DVDs, but so far I'm very impressed with the TV series which surprised me a little since it barely lasted a single season and had what appears to be a limited budget. Roddy McDowall does a great job bring back one of the original characters from the original Planet of the Apes films. Just as impressive are the on location sets and props, most of which were reused from the original films. One show was filmed almost entire on Malibu beach in what looks like the original area used in the first film! Go Ape for this series!
If you are a true Planet of the Apes fan then you will certainly enjoy the television series. What I find unique and great is that the creators were able to take the story in multiple directions by utilizing new astronauts that landed on the planet. It does take place some time after the first film and is meant to be an alternate story line; (if the planet wasn't blown up in the second film, Beneath the Planet of the Apes.) Humans have evolved from the mute, cavemen-like beasts they once were in the first film to basically common peasants and household slaves to the apes . The two astronauts, along with a renegade chimpanzee named Galen, are on the lam from the militant gorillas after an accidental murder of an ape. They go from village to village, out running the gorillas in hopes to find a way back to their time. Sadly, the series only lasted for 14 episodes so there is of course unanswered questions. The final "ape-isode" ends on a hopeful and wistful note. This box set release is a 4-disc set, each containing episodes that have been lovingly restored. A great memory revisited...
Growing up in the 70s I loved the Planet of the Apes movies (and King Kong, Godzilla, etc.) and I faithfully tuned in each week to this short-lived TV series with the great Roddy McDowell. But they never seem to play these shows in reruns so I thought it was only a distant memory until I discovered that they were available on DVD.
